New Nokia 808 - 41Mpix onboard camera.

My guess would either be prohibitive costs at DSLR sensor sizes, or patent wars over it. Not to mention a lot of strain on the processing units and memory storage in RAW.

It is perfectly possible to use the technology in todays DSLRs but they need to be high resolution bodies to start with like the 5D2 or D800 (much bigger pixels = much less need to downsample to eliminate noise)

What I'd be interested to see is new noise reduction algorithms based on this technology; if a noisy pixel can be identified in downsampling and ignored, it stands to reason it can be identified and corrected with something like a local level content aware fill.

Don't quite get why this would only suit high res bodies (seeing as they've just stuck it in a phone!) or am I missing the point? Couldn't this be used in say a crop sensor size to get good clear low noise output to good effect? It seems not to be more megapixels for the sake of it, but sort of using info from 7 fully functioning pixels to make one 'super' pixel, ie using the best info from 7 for that 1 and averaging out the rouge errors. Does look interesting idea if applied in a dslr format, IMHO.

Unfortunately, do agree 100% re patent wars. Not expecting nikcan to be using this any time soon (boo-hoo!)

Probably not but 1 it sells phones/camera's and 2 Nokia doesn't have alot going on now compared to before.

Interesting. Its says that the phone will still only use 8mp but the images will be sharper and more crisp. I have always said that anything more that 10mp on a phone is too much. I had the Xperia X10 when that came out and the images were amazing for a phone. Even Apple are boasting from the rumours that the newest iPhone 5 will be revolutionary in every way, sporting new Sony optics... Watch this space.

no worries Nick. It does look promising, for camera technology as a whole....just can't figure out why they bothered strapping a sub standard phone to it.

Massive image downsizing is where its at currently - if you read what those in the know are saying about the D800's 36mp thats exactly what they are suggesting its use is for.

Saying "have a better sensor" isn't the same, you have technical constraints (v small size in a phone) and financial ones too that this overcomes.

Its radical and well done Nokia, but to use this in a Symbian phone is unlikely to set the world on phone. Incorporate this into a winpho/android/ithing and then its a killer feature but nobody wants a Symbian phone now, as radical as it was all those years ago its so far eclipsed now it might as well be a cassette player.

Yes its tiny, its on a bloody phone, but this innovation improves the quality quite a lot - you'd be surprised.

my take is that they are for a publicity stunt with this one, they will do anything just to get into headlines.
Actually it was quite successful attempt I must say.
Now, will I buy a phone like that? Probably no.

I think they probably did it to sell phones, being a phone manufacturer and all...

They never used to just make phones though....the Dbox is an awesome cable tv receiver. Maybe they should branch out again(as in manufacturing "micro" pocket cameras maybe? because their phones suck these days).

If I'm understanding this right this technology could be used to downsize noisy high ISO files using software
What I mean is it would be great if I could downsize a noisy ISO 3200 18 mp file from my 550d to a clean 5mp one
I'm not technically minded tho :D so maybe its not possible

Yes, exactly that! Perfectly possible in photoshop.

What people have been talking about is downsampling D800 36mp images down to the 12mp of the D3 and saying that the result is better than the D3/D700 when you do it.

Downsampling is one technique, combining multiple exposures to reduce noise is another (assuming of course that your subject is static and so is your camera...)

Ahh I see , thanks :)

Well I'm impressed, seems there are people on here who don't want to be, which is fine. I've been using a Nokia N8 for the past 18 months or so and I've been very impressed with the pictures from it, to the point that my compact has seen less and less use (still going to be buying an X10 though!!). This new phone might well be my choice of upgrade when I'm due, as I really can't get excited about the relative merits of operating systems.

I presume you haven't had time to read the Tim Parkin link yet?
The IQ may well turn out to be comparable to a 5DII with a decent prime lens strapped onto it.

Completely agree with the other posters - wish they would ditch the phone part of it.

So wait till Canon get the same sensor full frame.... ;)

I had a play with one yesterday and frankly I wasn't getting images anything like the sample shots but then again it was inside in a tradeshow hall. The GUI for the camera is pretty atrocious, you have to navigate a lot of menus to change settings and they've all been dumbed down completely or new names invented for stuff.

I'm sure it's better than the feeling I was left with.. especially for non-camera users. The signage was awful too, "Now everybody can be a photographer!" etc :D

And it's Symbian because Windows Phone doesn't have the support for the DSPs and interface chips with the bandwidth needed. Maybe christmas time they'll have a Windows Phone with that camera (or next iteration) on it.

I would buy a phone like this, I don't do text, I don't do Spacebook or Myface. I make and receive voice calls, occasionally need a little bit of satnav and would love to have a quality camera in my pocket for those occasions when you need it. I am also a big fan of nokia as a result of my history with them and the associated reliability.

Of course this phone will probably cost as much as a 60D, in which case I will have a 60D and a cheap phone....
