Will they , won't they? What are people's thoughts re the rumoured d700 replacement?...announcement any time soon? And what spec? Hoping for somewhere around 24 mp and a little cheaper than the d800....what do you think ?

If the spec rumoured about the d600 is true it is in no way a replacement for the D700 just a D7000 with a full frame sensor.

I was really hoping for a D700 with a 24mp sensor but alas it looks like D7000 body with a 24mp FF sensor.

No doubt it'll be a cracking camera but not what D700 would look for as a potential upgrade.

There still remains a massive gap in the market between the now fairly dated D700 and the D800.

I thought the D800 was the D700 replacement.

?

The rumoured D600 is a new "entry level" full frame camera. (replacing d300s? Although the d300s was a DX)

Nikon may have intended it to be and I guess some will look at it as a direct replacement but going from 12mp & 18MB RAW files to 36mp and 70MB RAW files is a massive step up that will probably mean a PC upgrade alongside the camera upgrade for many.

If the D800 had been 24mp it would have been on my shopping list straight away. If Nikon ever do a firmware upgrade giving the option of small RAW files like Canon do in the 5DIII then it will go on the shopping list but as it is at the moment, the D800 is too big a jump from the D700.

Can you not drop the size down on the D700 to make the files smaller?

I have that option on the D7000.

i'm hoping the d600 is a good partner to the d800.
I wish nikon would do what canon do and let you shoot in different RAW sizes (D4 does it) but D800 could REALLY do with that feature.

You have the option to change the size of the JPG files but not the RAW files unfortunately.

You can change from 14 bit to 12 bit from memory on the d7000 it reduces the file size a little bit when shooting in raw.

I think somewhere between 18-24mp would be about right however as others have said it sounds more like a FF version D7000 and not a replacement for D700.

If they'd released a new FF D700s with an 18-24mp sensor they'd have been onto a winner imo however I still think an entry level FF based on a D7000 body will sell well. I just think alot of people (me being one) would've preferred a D700 body with a newer FF sensor:)

Sadly the D700 and it's DX brother the D300s seem like the end of the line for 2 great DSLR's:shrug:

I couldn't agree more. I think this single move would open up the appeal of the D800 to a much wider audience, as it essentially makes the camera much more versatile.

The D600's design does (from what has been seen) seem based on a D7000 style body, which I really feel will put some people off. I realise that the image quality and video could be a draw, but I know I'd rather have that in a more D700/D800 type of body.

But we shall see, I've not seen a rear shot of the D600 yet, so I suppose I should hold opinion until I've seen how they're going to lay everything out!

Agree with this. Generally very happy with my D700 and really wouldn't fancy dropping to a smaller body. The D800 is tempting but I wouldn't want to make that leap until I've invested in a speedier computer. That makes it a pricey jump.

What would tempt me is a D700 body with a D4 sensor, 100% view finder and a few of the other mod cons like video, intelligent auto iso or whatever it's called and F8 auto focus. Can't see it happening though.

had a flick on one of the links in my thread asking about d700 vs d800 - someone mentioned the d600.

I enjoy 51 point focus at the moment, but the rumoured specs suggest 39 point on the d600.

Looks almost like a d300s crossed with a d700 perhaps?

Think they suggested a release date around november (with it on show in september... perhaps?)

so what would people consider the spec to be a replacement for the D700 then? Why doesnt the D800 tick that box, is it simply too many pixels or other functionality?

To be honest, it's pretty damn close for me but the 36mp can be viewed as a downside given the processing power needed to work with them and the resultant slowish maximum fps. It's also slightly disappointing that it doesn't seem to offer any gain in high iso performance.

I'm still tempted by a D800 but in all honesty I don't think I'd truly make use of any of the features that it offers over a D700. I'd be much happier with a D4 sensor in a D800 body. That would be my preference.
