New Nikon 28-300mm

I've been away for a few days and hadn't realised how my post was going to be discussed, frankly I own a D3 because anyone who has used one will tell you it's a wonderful camera. I also own a 24-70 f2.8 Nikkor, a 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor, both wonderful lenses but in my opinion not needed on the day ( good light, no particular requirement for shallow dof and nothing moving that fast that the 28-300 couldn't focus on it). This is not a cheap and cheerful lens, I thought the results were pretty good, most of the failures were user error rather than lens related and knowing the range I needed on the day it seemed like the ideal choice. Sorry if I offended anybody but hey ho, its my money I'll spend it on whatever camera I want thanks!

In some ways I would love this lens. For airshows or for days out with my son it would be perfect - my arm was hurting after taking the 70-200 round Thomasland earlier in the year!!! However, my shopping list has a 24-70 at the top, and a D700 second - for the £800 or so it costs, I just feel this lens is too much as I would be unlikely to use it for paid work.

Succint and to the point !!

Thank you for posting this.
I had a thread last week asking about this lens and from what i have seen here i am glad i ordered it yesterday and sat here waiting for it today.
I have brought it for my new D700 as a general walk about and travel lens.

Seems fairly sharp and some nice pics... although not on my normal laptop at the moment and display not great but they look fine. Seems like a good walkabout lens, although I am a fan of 2.8 lenses myself.

Agreed.
Looks sharp on screen. Personally I wouldnt get anything like it, I'm learning from my mistakes of floating apertures and getting decent glass.

Just got myself a 24-70 Nikon 2.8 and it really does amaze me how much different the quality is compared to cheaper glass and I don't think I'll ever go back to floating apertures....
Well I still have one lens to upgrade but it will do for now.

I'll deffo be getting one of these as a holiday snapper. Price seems to be dropping according to Camera Price Buster... lowest £824 (inc postage) now.

Further update. Here are a set of photos from the Taj Mahal that were all shot on the 28-300.

I see its not moving :D

Yes the 28-300 has it's place in the lineup as a general purpose (and pretty good quality) walk about lens. I have an 18-200 on my D300 for that purpose. I just love the 24-70 though and cannot see why the 28-300 is nearer it's price than maybe £600. It sounds a bit pricey (unless I have the price wrong)

It was always going to be near the 24-70 because the quality is outstanding and it has a range of 28-300. The 18-200 was over £500 when it first came out.

Also the 28-300 has VR which the 24-70 doesn't (and doesn't need it)

VR doesn't add much to the price look at the 18-55

I would still like to see the 28-300 against the 24-70 in some normal situations.

I am not anti 28-300 I would actually like one to replace the 18-200 but I just feel it is too much.

Early adopters will always pay a premium. I reckon it'll stabilise. Expect it to be closer to £650 when it does. I can see me using it for outdoor Summertime Show Jumping.....need to borrow my mates to evaluate it first.

Maybe. I would get one and replace the 18-200 with it or alternatively pass the 18-200 on to family and get it. It would be a quite useful lens on the D300. I am trying to get together the money for a D4 though at the moment.... £4K by March/April I recon....

The VR on that lens is VERY different to the 28-300 VR (in the same way that the VR in 300mm is not even remotely similar to the 18-55)

Possibly. We'll see what the price does but I would quite like this lens to replace the 18-200 as a walkabout

D4 in March/April - do you know something we don't?

No unlike the D7000 (Which I basically knew about 4 months before) I don't actually know anything about the D4 at all. I am simply guessing on this occasion. It will be the start of the new financial year and I am hoping that my accountant can show a 20+K loss this year as I bring all my own equipment into the business (with the £100K 1st year capital allowance) and claim my VAT back etc. With this in mind I should have maybe £5-6K to spend on part things before using my "own" money. I am hoping to treat myself to a 70-200 vr2 from overtime over christmas so the D4 should fill the gap with an F6, F5 and maybe 14-24 :D

Interesting plan Darren - I hope you accountant can sort it all out for you.

Btw, I've lost track of the current HMRC rules on gear (i.e. capital allowance). If I bought say £15k of gear today, could I split the capital allowance over two years (this tax year and next tax year), or does it all have to be used in the first year?

I don't know, I'm not an accountant. All I know is that you CAN use upto £100K in the first year which will be useful for me.

Ok, thanks Darren, I'll go and have a snoop at HMRC's site. In the words of someone famous - I may be gone for some time!

To update the thread, here are two photos taken with the 28-300

As an all rounder, I really don't know of a better lens.
