I am currently looking to buy a new monitor-
I have upto £1000 to spend ,however would like to try and keep it lower as the extra funds would be going towards the desktop.

I was looking at the dell 2711 27" monitor which has had some good reviews-

Does anybody own one, and what is their experience with it ?
How does it calibrate?
I will be using a laptop intially which only has a reslotion of 1920 x 1080, will this be an issue?

If you were to buy a monitor for photograpy/films & gaming which one would it be?

Personally, I'd go with 2 x 24" monitors (I have 2 x Dell U2410, but there is also a U2411 which appears cheaper).. I find having my working space on one and the image I am working on another much nicer. You'd be able to save a few hundred for extras for the desktop then too.

As to the laptop resolution - is that as high as it will go for a second monitor? You don't have to duplicate the screen on the second monitor - you should be able to run 2 independent screens. Most laptops will go up to the native display resolution of the external monitor (although it might struggle with the 27" native resolution)....

Thanks for your feed back , I am now off down that path- It was what I had initially considered, however it would be dificult to get two biggish monitors past the wife.....:bonk::bonk:

There may be some ssue with space in the comming future and I would have to move the outfit into the master bed room.

How do the monitors work out the box?
Have you calibrated them?

How much space do they actually take up?

Monitors aren't bad out of the box (the U2410s are calibrated in sRGB mode before they are shipped), but there was a slightly different colour cast to them. Yes, I calibrated them and they snapped into looking the same.

As to how much space, exactly 2x the monitor width ;)

I think I'm the opposite - our workplace has been running dual 1280x1024 for ages and moved to single 1920x1200.

Was a bit reluctant to sacrifice horizontal pixels, but the extra vertical pixels are a godsend.

I new i would get some stick for that question, I have checked the dimentions and they are coming in at 56cm each- so 1.12m
If I was to go down this route, I think I would buy one and see how it looked and fitted in. I can use my laptop at present to dual monitor, and when I purchased the desktop I would need to get another monitor as I was loosing the screen real estate and would need another to make up the space ;);)

Have you used this monitor for gaming or watching films?

The dell u2410 come with 1920x1200 resolution so by buying 2 would give me double the space !
 
ive decided on 2x dell 2209UW for my set up, workflow i find easier on 2 monitors!

I wish I could afford one :) if I would have cash, I would not hesitate!!!
My mate had one....brilliant!!!!

would swap my 24 any day for it :)

it is worth looking on ebay for Dell 30" screens , ultrasharps :)

but at the end of the day...27 is nice as well;) but not too big jump for me if that would be me ;0

I don't get this... There is a natural break in workspace when you have Lightroom running - look at the pic I posted above. One screen has the catalogue/editing workspace, the other has the result. Same with PS... you open a new window on the image you're working on and one screen has the full image, the other has the editing space. It actually makes it easier IMHO...

Yes, I'd take 2x 27" or 2x 30" if I had the room, but I don't so I'll stick with the 2x 24". BTW, every time I revert to 1x monitor, it's like having my teeth pulled... From what I've read, boliston is in a minority of one when it comes to monitor usage ;) :D

I am still in a quandry- I have experiance of using a two monitor set up at work,and find it quite annoying- altho I am not using any photo editing software, just excel,word and outlook.

I am sure it would be different if I was using it for photo editing, with one set up for the photo and the other as the work station.

Pitty PC world dont stock dells as I would simply nip over there to get a better Idea.

thats fine, 2 screens is not something you HAVE to have if youre not comfortable with it.

personally i use 2 screens all day every day at work and wouldnt ever go back, so likewise i got 2 for home also.
 
Quite a lot of people seem to prefer 2 smaller screens at work instead of one big one.
I think it's "horses for courses" i am happy to sacrifice some horizontal pixels for the benefit of having no break in the middle of my workspace, and a better vertical resolution.

At work I often need to use a large spreadsheet and having to spread it over 2 screens can be annoying. For home use it means that viewing a large photo is easier as the extra vertical pixels are more valuable than the extra horizontal pixels.

Todays is Brian (balancing a Bonio style biscuit on his nose): "I'm a dog, a stupid dog. Woof." Not had that Stewie quote yet...

The one that made me laugh the most (so far) was Peter jiggling his moobs and giggling to himself....

Anyway :

30" Hazro + 20.5" Dell (rotated).

2560x1600 + 1200x1600

Crucially - same dot pitch, and both IPS panels. I find from looking at a lot of people with secondary monitors that if your monitors aren't matched, you end up only using one of them.

Dust, chaos, and general mess is all my own though - not going to pretend I'm better than this normally!:help: The photo within a photo was cos first try was too soft (not my favourite lens...)

I generally only use the 30" monitor most of the time though - the extra monitor is only when I run out of space (which is not often!) or for big lightroom sessions.

I like that layout (and the pic being edited is cool ;)) The key thing is the rotated monitor is 4:3, not 16:10, so you probably wouldn't find it as restrictive...

I've used the rotated monitor in the past (before I got the 30" which is the same, obviously...) when working on long word documents as you can see up and down a lot more but don't need the width. I've seen them used for long lists of information at work as well. But most of the time, landscape is more comfortable - I'm still not a fan of 16:10 though, 16:9 is better...
