I was thinking of the Dell UltraSharp U2412M, but it's only a 6bit panel, am I wasting my time going for an IPS if I am just going to get a cheap one?

Any other recommendations? (I like the 16:10 ratio)

Nothing much wrong with the Dell U2412M for the money. :)

See review here. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm

It has a 6 bit + A-FRC panel.

From the review: "The 6-bit + A-FRC of the U2412M is well implemented and gradients are actually very good with no visible banding. There is no obvious evidence of the FRC algorithm unless you look very closely for it. This cost cutting exercise is not a big issue and although some people may disregard the screen based on the spec, the mass market need not worry about "

See the FAQs here. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/faq.htm about that and other 'stuff'. ;)

It's my second monitor and it's not bad at all. Calibrates reasonably well. I use it for everyday work and checking images on sRGB when I have to adjust them from AdobeRGB on my other monitor.

I use an LG IPS 236V at home. I paid about 150GBP for it, no complaints!

I've been offered a Dell 2407WFP for less than £200 and that is an 8bit panel. So I'll probably go for that. Any one have any experience of that.

I've currently got a couple of monitors that show colours quite badly, but otherwise are good monitors, so I want to upgrade to a monitor that I calibrate reasonably accurately.

Further investigating the site I linked to earlier reveals that they reviewed it back in September 2007. :p

It's a good monitor and the S-PVA panels were always my choice for a reasonably priced photo monitor back then. It's obviously a much older monitor than the U2412 and I can't comment on the condition of the panel and backlighting by after five years as I've usually changed them for new well before that. My Eizo Coloredge has a five year warranty for instance which is very good by standards of LCD warranties. :)

I really wouldn't get hung up on the 6-bit / 8-bit thing unless you're working commercially.

Aye I'd read that, but it seems to be a different model, they also mention a standard 2407wfp in the review, which is the one I'm thinking of.

I don't want to spend and get a new monitor if there's not going to be a decent improvement over what I already have.

It depends what models you are moving from. :)

Do you use TN film panel, or versions of the IPS, MVA or PVA tech? The biggest difference will be seen moving from a TN panel to one of the others. We had some dreadful TN panels in the office which have thankfully all been replaced by cheap as chips end of line Dell U2311Hs with 6-bit + A-FRC e-IPS panels that still manage 16.7 million colours. Colour and viewing angles were worse than awful until we did that. :gag:

If you are moving from a TN film panel then go by the review test results rather than if it's a 6-bit panel. :)

sorry, i have no idea.

2*07wfp was a lottery - you could either get IPS or PVA panels. You can probably tell that from serial number if you look at wikipedia write up.

I have little complaints about 2007wfp except it's only 20" (but extended to 15" MBP screen so not as bad).

Listen to this man. :plusone: :)

Further reading indicates there were changes in firmware and panels because of reported problems with banding and fuzzy text. Not something you want if you're trying to improve on your current monitors. :gag:
