My name is ken, I live in norfolk, Hello to everyone.
Have been useing compact sony dsc-p52 which was my first digital camera
bought for £30 second hand. I was amazed at the sharpness of the pics I took useing this camera.Close, ups of bricks, cycle tyres, flowers ect.But I noticed when takeing landscapes if I got too much light sky in the image it would have a milky area down the center of it,the les sky I got in,less milkyness no sky no milky patch.I upgraded to a panasonic tz4 which did not seem as sharp as the sony but was sharper when colour set to vived. So have now splashed out on the d40 (sorry to take so long but thought full history might help) I have three main problems with the d40 firstly can,t get sharp pictures sd card takes long time to load to computer. Z4 with more pixles is fast, and lastly when viewing on computer images have black bars top and bottom. If anyone can help I would be so greatfull.

Hi Ken and welcome to the forum :)

My initial impression is that you may have the camera not on fully auto settings, which means that maybe the shutter speeds are a little too slow if you're not getting sharp images.

Not knowing any of these cameras very well, a DSLR is a different beast to a compact/bridge camera.

The best thing to do is post some images showing any blur, EXIF data and also the black horizotal and vertical lines and I'm sure someone will advise you on any problems :)

Hi, I own a D40 and I found images load up almost instantly from the SD card onto my computer so I wonder if the issue lies in with how your computer gets on with an SD card (I've found that celeron-based PCs are dreadfully slow in down loading images from cards).
As for the black borders, that's because pictures on a D40 has a slightly more widescreen format (whereas pictures on a point & shoot is of the traditional 4:3 format). It takes that into account when viewing pictures taken from your D40 on a PC, hence the black borders top and bottom. Well, that's the first thing I've noticed when I got my D40 six months ago. :naughty:

Hi and thanks all, pictures when viewed on camera screen look beter than on my computer and pictures taken with flash look sharper than without. Haven,t had much good light since bought camera so I suppose that would allow me to get the shutter speed up, have to hope for some sun.when I get to know how to use the forum better hope to post some pics also do not know how to get exif info.Regards ken
