Hi there,
My name is Wayne, I'm from Tamworth in the midlands.
I have a Nikon D90 with a few lenses & have been trying to improve my photography skills with the help of this great site!!
I have posted a couple of pictures that I hope someone would kindly critique for me so I have an idea if I'm doing things right..

Well having looked at your exif info on pic 1 id say your settings were a bit wacky :) you used a fast shutter speed and a pretty high ISO and set your exposure bias to -2 this is why your shot has a lot of grain or noise in it, although jpeg compression could also be a factor.

You should try leaving your ISO between 100 and 400 and use a much slower shutter speed to achieve the same effect without the noise and put your exposure bias back to 0,You'll find out how to do all that in your manual or on youtube if you don't already know.

Pic 2 the settings are better which is why there is less noise but your exposure bias is extremely low. Unless you are derliberately trying to under or over expose a shot by a stop or two you should leave the exposure bias at 0.

hope that helps.

Thanks for your feedback, it is very much appreciated. I'm trying to 'self-teach' with the help of lots of reading, viewing & practising! :)
The first picture was a bit of guess work, trying to capture the sunset in all it's glory, while trying to get everything right.
The second picture was taken using a stack of 2 ND filters, 0.9 & 0.6, with the camera in manual mode and lots of trial & error with numerous attempts of the picture looking very over exposed. I eventually settled for the picture shown..

Thanks again for your help

Hi there! I just joined as well! I think those sunsets look incredible. I'd love to go to the Maldives, I was in Bali and they had the most beautiful scenery and stunning sunsets. I would've loved to have stayed there!

Welcome Wayne, unforuntely the first pic has a lot of noise in it, I'm guessing the iso was set high? try lowering it and slow the shutter speed mate, tripod's a must too if not already using one for these shots.

The second pic's a lot better but there's something about the composition that doesn't work for me, it's not that its 'wrong' in anyway but doesn't hold my attention. Good stuff though!

Thanks snaphappycat, I used a Gorillapod tripod. I know what you mean about the 2nd one, I got the effect I wanted but, I'm not sure. It was my 1st time using filters so, a lot of trial & error.
The 1st pic was again lots of practice goes.
It just goes to show with this photography lark..Practice, practice, practice !

Thanks again,
Wayne
