Hi all! Just started getting into photography a bit more than I have been and I was wondering what to sell my canon 400d for? Preferably along the same price bracket. I was thinking the 450d but wasn't sure. I wanted more megapixels and it doesn't have to be a canon but I do prefer them for some reason.

Also to add I want to start selling to calendar company's eventually so has to be up to the job. Also I know an expensive lens on a cheap body is better than a cheap lens on an expensive body BUT that isn't an issue. thanks in advance to replies!

Nick.

Hi Nick and Welcome.

Hope you enjoy TP

A few quick questions that may help us out with recommendations.

What's your budget ?
What do you find limiting with your 400D at the moment ?

If I was going to upgrade, I'd be looking for a jump of a couple of bodies - say the 550 or 600D bodies.

Are you happy with the size (physical size) of your current body, have you thought about an increase in body size - 40 / 50D range

Size isn't a problem with the camera to be honest. my budget is what ever I can sell my 400 for and maybe £100 more. I just think i need more megapixels to be honest maybe 12 or a little higher? Hope that helps?

You'd certainly get a 450D for that price, my daughter has one and she loves it. You might be able to stretch to a 500 / 550D. Not sure of what the upgrade of 500 over the 450 offers ?

I like the look of the 600d, would that suit someone who wants to sell photos to a company that may or may not publish my pictures?

Ok I have decided on a 50d, is this a wise choice?

A 50d is a wise upgrade, you may have been disappointed with the 450 as the difference would have been marginal and I was never that happy with the results from mine after upgrading from a 350d.

I recently upgraded from a 450d to a 60d and am really pleased with the difference in build quality and useability between the XXXd and XXD ranges, just simple things like the top panel lcd.

I think you'll be really pleased with the 50d, and as mentioned i think the difference from 400d to 450d will be too small to notice.

Thank you for the replies.!! I just think the 400d lacks in what others can do and I want a camera that would last me say 5 years that I would be happy with and can budget. The 60d is defiantly a great camera but I don't think my budget can allow for it. just out of curiosity could someone tell me what my canon 400d with a standard 35-80mm (auto focus not working) 2 batteries, tamron 75-300mm 4-5.6 and a lens hood would sell for?

save up for the 600D

surley calenders are small so the pictures wouldnt need to be taken with a high MP camera

i might be wrong but i thought the higher the MP the larger the print can be made from it

Dunno about them all being small, there are plenty of larger ones for sale in the high street.

However, whenever I even begin to think that I'm being limited by kit I look at what other people are achieving with the same kit and realise that the limitation is... me.

i just had the small strip calenders in mind
didnt think of the bit larger ones
but still there not massive so 10MP should serfice

It's not the resolution that's limiting you. Even for printing at 300ppi (professional photographic print quality) a 12x9inch print will be under 10Mp. I'd imagine that a calender wouldn't be printed that high anyway.
I had a quick google and http://www.digicamguides.com/print/ppi-print-size.html seems to cover the basics.
To me, upgrading from the 400d to 450d wouldn't even seem like an upgrade. The 30d,40d or 50d would be the best options for your budget. But unless it is the camera that's limiting you, there won't be any improvement in your images.
Check Flickr.com, 500px.com etc for what can be done with the 400d.
Also have a look at images from the Canon 1D Mark 1 (4.3Mp) and Mark 2 (8.2Mp). These were, and still are, pro level cameras so not quite a fair comparison with the 400d but they do have a much lower resolution and were used for much larger prints than you are thinking about.

Nick,
I think it will be kinda hard to sell your 400D if the auto focus isn't working,Also the 50D has more noise over iso 8oo...40 OR 60D would be a better choice. My first camera was a 450D/XSI an it is a great camera(I still have it and use it along side my 7D) but there would not be much difference from the 400D
