New mattress required

Having bought a cheap mattress of the back of a lorry (quite literally) we are in need of a new mattress. Looking at pocket sprung so I'm not shaken all over the place when my wife tosses and turns but apart from that I'm clueless.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy mattresses? How much should I expect to pay for one that will last more than a year or 2? We were thinking we'd go to Dreams and try all of theirs out, is this a good tactic? Are we right at looking at pocket sprung?

Any tips are gratefully received.
 
When mattress buying its always best to take your time, when you think you're ready to make a decision, sleep on it first.
 
I spend half my time on a (medium softness) Tempur, it is unbelievably comfortable and it really does fit to you. However, in the summer it becomes almost unbearable due to the heat and how it feels like it's engulfing you. How hot do you get when sleeping in the summer months?

The other half of my time is spent on a firm sprung mattress, far cooler during the hot months, not quite as comfortable though. Would not want to sleep on this through the winter.

Do you spend much time sitting on your bed? I find the Tempur is only really a sleeping mattress, whereas it's easier to 'lounge' on a sprung one.

The tempur was from Dreams, good service, I think it was around the £1.5-£2k mark but still going strong after 2 years. The firm sprung was probably 1/2 to a 1/4 of the price.

Have flipped it a couple of times since using it as per instructions. It is a bit odd the first time you use them, but it's a good odd. Some of my family hate them though and say it's like being in a coffin when you sink down, I guess it's all personal opinion, get down to Dreams and try them out!

Part of the problem with the current mattress is we are both waking up hot on it this winter with a memory foam top so from what you've said I think we will steer well clear of the tempur ones.

Why do you say you wouldn't want to sleep on the sprung mattress in the winter?

In winter you want everything to be soft and comfortable, plus with the (what I find to be) cooling nature of the firm mattresses, they just aren't as 'cosy' during the cold months. (Wow how masculine do I sound there!) But perhaps that's because I tend to stick to the same duvet thickness throughout the year. Maybe the firmer mattress would be better with a thicker duvet.

If you're hot in winter with a topper then as you said definitely steer clear of the full Tempur mattresses! You'll be waking up in a swimming pool of sweat!

If you've got a memory foam top, is that because you want a softer mattress? I think it's dreams that has a grading system (for firmness / softness) over all of the mattresses regardless of brand.

Website mentions that latex filling is particularly cooling and breathable so that may be a good one? Haven't used it myself though so can't comment on it.

Will have a good read of that soon, sound like Dreams are set up as a testing station and that's kind of what we need.
 
Have a pocket sprung one here.
Cozy as you like in the winter :thinking: .....firm but cosetting.
Get a good one.
 
Multi layered memory foam here. Can't remember where it came from but do remember that we tried a LOT of others before deciding on this one! IIRC it was around the £600 mark 7 years ago (can remember that it was that long ago since it was a wedding present! 7 year itch?!!!) A wise man once said that you shouldn't skimp when buying beds/matresses or shoes - if you're not in one, you're usually in the other. From memory, the reasoning behind the multi layers is to help keep you cool. We tried a Tempur for a few nights (my parents had one) and hated the heat, the one we ended up with keeps Mrs Nod warm and me cool.
 
I have memory foam mattress and its great but i have a merino wool under lay its warm in winter and cool in summer
 
Our mattress. 5 years old now and going strong. I am always warm and we have a down duvet, but I rarely get hot, but then again I am not always 100% under the duvet.

I am around 17.5 stone and the last 2 mattresses (pocket sprung and a normal mattress before that) both ended up with me in a crater after only 2 - 3 years.

Benefit of foam - absolutely no wobbling when your missus turns over.
 
We have had a Sealey Posturepedic for about twelve years, and it is in great condition (despite me being just over 15 stone). We do rotate and air it regularly, and there are no low spots or craters whatsoever. I think it was about £600 when we bought it, and the prices do not seem to have changed much. I think it is pocket sprung.

i'm not sure i'd believe their grading system,,,we bought a medium (Jan last year ),1 is hard 5 is soft ,and ours was a 4 but it was an internet only deal ,,,we thought a medium would be fine so we took a chance and got it .when it came it was like a block of concrete ,so within two days we phoned and complained ,,but was told it needed at least 30 days to get to its softness level and for us to get used to it .( sounded like [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] to me ) but we said ok we'd see how it went .i think they can be returned within that time and changed but it was a fee of something like £40 .( ive just looked and they expect you to keep it for 30 days and if you dont like it you can exchange it between 30 and 40 days ) unfortunately we kept trying to get used to it and overshot the time limit by a couple of days when we finaly decided it was just too hard ,,and they wouldnt change it ( our fault ) now 14 months on and its still as hard as ever ,,,just thinking of changing it again
so if you get one try and get to feel it first ( bit like buying a camera )


and the reason im only just thinking of changing it now is , i stayed at a relatives house for a couple of days ,slept on a softer mattress and realised just how much better my sleep was compared to the concrete block
 
we bought our daughter a mattress from ikea, its half sprung/half memory foam, it was if i remember corectly circa £400 for a double ,its so comfy and not as "hot" as our tempur memory foam mattress were going to ditch it and buy one from ikea.

its not been mentioned before and i dont want to sound crude but i dont find the memory mattresses as good for ahem how do i put it nicely......."gymnastics";) , i keep sinking in the b****r and it puts me off my stride :exit:
 
but they don't make as much noise.

Silent Night used to make all IKEA beds, no idea if they still do.
 
We've just bought a memory foam mattress in the last couple of weeks, went from a cheap sprung mattress and the difference is amazing.
I think its got 200mm of reflex foam and 50mm of memory foam.
We paid around £300 for it so its not a mega expensive one. Its very firm but couple it with some memory foam pillows and its ridiculously comfortable.
The last week or so I've woken up and had no stiffness in my neck/back or anything.
Can't believe the difference it's made to be honest.
 
Thanks to everyone for their input. We went and bought one at the weekend. The chap also chucked in a couple of latex pillows (RRP £80 each) for free which feel a nice but different to a normal pillow. Looking forward to trying them out long term.

I didn't like the feel of Tempur mattresses, completely weird sensation. We tried a slightly cheaper Silentnight one but the edges weren't as supportive as the rest of the mattress so i felt like i was falling off when I went to get on and off.
 
As in "You're not as good as your sister!" then hold on for dear life?

That did occur to me whilst I was trying and failing to turn over. Because you sink into it, I dare say me and my wife would end up cuddling in a hollow rather than canoodling energetically! :-\
 
No "traction" problems here! Joking aside (although the traction point is true), it may be worth adopting a kneeling position on potential purchases to make sure there won't be any problems. Pretty sure the sales staff will have seen it all before!
