Hi,

ok so im off tomorrow to collect my new Macbook pro after using a pc all my computer life im a little nervous. the idea is to use it for tethered studio work and outdoor events and i basically wanted to know what else i might need as ive never shot tethered before.

i am using a canon 5D and a 40D and also have Eos utility to install. the only usb cable i have are the ones supplied which are approx 1m long and the only other software i have is elements 6 and lightroom for windows.

if there are any other pieces of equipment you think i will need or maybe some mac software you recommend please let me know i would greatly appreciate it. also where can i get longer USB cables from ?

cheers

Julien

The EOS utility will enable you to shoot tethered. You'll find the instructions on onre of the CD that came with the cameras. You may need to load the software for both cameras, as there are specific drivers for each camera. Fell unto that trap when I lopaded the software for my 5D only to find the 20D wouldn't talk to to Zoombrowser.

Longer USB cable, you can get from any branch of Maplin. I got a 2M extension for about £9.00. Be careful not to get to long a cable as there is a limit to the length of a USB cable and still maintain connection

I think the maximum length is 5M, but you can get repeaters

thanks John

Hello. Yeah eos utility will do most of the work for you. I have adobe bridge with it, so as files are shot they open in bridge (as raw files) for viewing. And then photoshop cs3 is at hand to edit the photos on-the-fly if i need to check how they may look post production.

Definatelty need a longer cable. I bought my usb extender off Ebay for a couple of pounds. Think its 3m and that plugged with the canon cable makes a generous enough legth to shoot with.

here is the usb i bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-A-2-0-Hig...ryZ86697QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It came in about 2/3 days. i've only used it a few times and its been fine. Can't see any reason for it to fail.

thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it.

If you aren't still using your PC you could get your Lightroom license changed to a Mac one. I do the same as Catchpole_11, but use Lightroom to monitor the folder instead. The only thing I don't like about that system is that I can't get it to convert to DNG on import.

You dont need to convert the Lightroom license, the serial number is valid for Mac & Pc, just download the latest mac version from Adobe.

oo ill give that a try

Is there any way to get the picture that has just been taken to either show up full screen or in Photoshop. I am using a mac with leopard.

i got my book and i love it already, had some initial problems using my 5D tethered where eos utility says that the camera is busy but i overcame this using the image on the lcd method.

i got Aperture 2 and so far ive found that to be the best method for tethered shooting as lightroom and imagebrowser were really slow and i cant work out how to go back and forth in DPP through the images whilst the shoot is in process.

we have 10 clients in a row today so its gonna be a real test. fingers crossed
