finally got myself a new lens for my d3200 got a af-s dx nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6g ed vr cant wait to test it next week at my local race track holding there car track day so can give it a good test out :)

Sounds good. Have fun.

Just a tip for panning on cars: Turn the VR off, it’s too intrusive on the panning motion and actually makes your photos blurry, so if you’re panning make sure you have the VR off. Higher level lenses have different VR modes specifically for panning but yours doesn’t so you’ll want to turn it off all together :)

This lens has vr2 which you keep ON while panning. It states so in the manual. And as for the AF yer its not as fast as the more expensoce 70-300mm vr which is 2-3 times the price but its faster that its tamron and sigma rivals

thanks all for the comments i will let ya know *** i think of it any tips are welcome as i havent used a dslr camera for car shots yet :-)

I have the same lens. Yes it is slow to focus but I guess thats the trade off in price. I do like using it.

As advised, turn off VR for tracking subjects. I tend to use a single point focus to tame the focus hunting.

Heres my flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/rossmiller/ the Zoo animals and the bird shots were done with the 55-300mm.

Read the manual you can pan with vr on

Maybe it's my technique but I find that turning it off works fine.

I don't know if its the same with Nikon but on all my canon lenses I always turn off any is/VCR off as it slows down autofocus on some lenses and it doesn't always help as your not always panning on a vertical axis and in those in circumstances it can actually hinder you.

I advised someone who always shot with it on the Saturday and they said the same to there mate and they both said they got a lot more images sharp with it off.

I had this lens until recently and never found the AF too slow.

I only sold it so that I could upgrade to a 70-200 f/2.8.
