I'm fairly new but have been doing a course for a few months now and it seems my specific interest is developing towards macro, i love the planing/minute detail/technical aspect of close up and with this in mind am planing on getting a new lens to suit. I'm looking at something like the canon ef 100 2.8, but . . . . . .
A friend, knowing i'm into photography has asked me to take some shots of her guest house, mainly rooms etc for her website. When i said i didn't have a lens really suitable (my lens is quite a long zoom) she offered to help with the cost of a new one.
Now, i dont want to pull the wool over in any way, but would a macro lens be any good for this type of shot.
I dont want to be putting money into a different lens i prob wont use much, i'd rather just say no and keep saving for my macro
 
you need to tell us what camera you have as a crop or full frame will make a difference to the answer... however the general rule of thumb is that you will need a really WIDE ANGLE lens to shoot rooms... seems a bit silly to spend any money on a lens to be used as a one off favour
 
I think the shortest macro lens is around 60mm, and that wouldn't be wide enough on either a FF or a crop to do interior room shots.
 
My camera is a 5d mk2, but i do have access to a 500d if it would make it work using a crop.

Might be worth getting her to hire a lens for you to use. she gets a better job done and you get to experience the use of a wider lens... for a 3 day hire, I can't see it been much more than £50 ish..Or if you could lend one for the day even better.
 
No Macro is going to be suitable on a 5D2 or 500D, if you don't want to spend on a wide angle, get a cheap 18-55 kit lens to deal with these situations.
 
Hmmmm, seems hiring might be the best option -would be nice to have a play with a fancy lens, plus i wont feel i'm getting her to pay towards something not right.
Is there anywhere in/near sheffield, or is it a mail order job

Artyman - just to be clear, you mean macro on my body is not good for this job only, not not good in general??

A canon EF 100mm 2.8 is £32 for a 3 day hire (excl postage).

A cost effective way to try it out before committing!

Not good on any body.

A macro lens is designed to focus on close subjects, usually distortion free and generally a longer focal length (not always but longer focal lengths get you further from your subject).

Interiors are shot on wide angle lenses, if you really want to do it properly a TSE would be awesome to hire for this job. But probably a bit too steep a learning curve for you at the moment.

More importantly, how are you planning to light the interiors? Do you have any off camera lighting? Experience in combining exposures or any idea how to make this work? Do you have a tripod?

The kit lens at 18mm is a good start, do you really only have a long zoom?
