Hello everyone,

Hope all is well.

I'm buying a new lens this week but am struggling to know what to go for.

While on a photoshoot recently (writing notes, not shooting) a Getty photographer recommended I invest in a 55-250mm lens. I was wondering if everyone thinks this is a good idea? And if not what else would you go for?

Primarily, I'll be using it to shoot pictures of golfers hitting shots and also for golf course images so ideally I would like it to be very clear and good quality. I was also wondering if you could let me know the benefits of a wide angle lens and show me an example of what they do. I'm really confused on what to get! Budget-wise anything around £300 is OK - sorry if that's asking for too much.

Thanks very much everyone,
Joe

This lens is recommended by lots of people. Great shots and good value for money....then you'll want an L lens! ;)

What lens do you have now? If it is the kit lens the 55-250 will complement it nicely.

With longer focal lengths you have less in the picture, but it looks bigger.

Seriously Joe, if you don't know what you want or what different lenses do, then save your money for now.

Use the kit lens, which is very versatile and probably the first choice for the golf and scenic shots you describe.

When you've got used to that, and found a few things that you cannot do with it, then get the right lens for that. I have several very nice lenses but still use the equivalent of your kit zoom for 75% of everything I shoot.

Really appreciate the honesty, Richard.
Thanks very much for saving me the money!

Richard is spot on, I have 50mm 1.8 mk I & II, 50mm 1.4, sigma 28-300 and afew others yet the kit lens goes on time and time again.

From Bradford, was in Leeds last night for an hour, designated driver :(
