New Lens...?

Just debating whether or not to go for the new Nikon 70-300 lens that they're bringing out. It's an f4-f5.6, but with VRII, so working on the basis that the slowest shutter speed should roughly match the length you're working to, should enable me to get sharp exposures at 1/15s (4 stops down from 1/250s). I'm tempted, especially at the projected price tag (less than £400)

I already have a 70-300G, but it's not as sharp as I'd like.

Should I wait for this one or go for a 2nd hand 80-200? I'm kinda tempted by the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM as well, but if I did, it'd have to be from Onestop, and I've heard varying reports about Sigma's QC and inconsistency - I'd hate to have to return it!

Any thoughts, anyone?

Wait!

The new Nikon has a lot of tricks up its sleeve - but the lens it's replacing is just the ED version of the lens you already have.. Which wasn't much different to yours.
What I'm saying is that even though it has VR & is AF-S it could still be optically a bit of a dog. If it isn't it could make a very interesting & well priced lens... But only time will tell.

So unless you need something now just wait till the lens is actually released & tested.

They're discontinuing the old 70-300? Don't think this one has the same optics though - 17/12 elements/groups instead of 13/9, some ED elements, internal focussing, etc... It sounds very interesting, especially at that price...

You're right - I'll probably wait until I see a review of it somewhere...

there were two versions of the 70-300, the normal one you have & the £200 ish ED one, which wasn't much better. This is replacing the ED version. It won't be the same optically, but it is still replacing a budget // mid zoom - so still may not be much cop. As I say, wait & see.
