Hi all,

Just wanted to share my delight ... look what the postman brought me today:

I've wanted this lens for years... and now I finally have it, it's every bit as good as I hoped! Kerso saved me about 500 GBP on the Jessops price too, which is nice!

Now I need to take some good shots with this kilo of glass!

You will LOVE it, I have the mkI version and the day I part with it is the day you can try to prize it from my cold dead hands.

enjoy it, big learning curve shooting at f1.2 but worth it.

I'd be interested in seeing some shots!
I'm leaning towards this over the 50mm L.

Good point! Well the light here today is very flat, and I have nobody else around so I can't demonstrate portraits, which is why I bought the lens! But in terms of pictures... here are a few that demonstrate the IQ of the 85L. They aren't intended as works of art, nor are they going to help pixel-peepers - there are plenty of other places to find fullsize pics if you want to check them out!

Here's a shot of the bird feeder. This was actually taken at f/2 to get a bit more of the feeder in the DOF. I love the way the subject pops out of the background.

Next up is the "clothespegs against trees and sky" shot, a.k.a. the "bokeh-o-meter". I've done this shot with my 35 f/2, Sigma 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8 and 135 f/2, and without doubt the 85L blows them all away... well, maybe the 135L is about the same ;-) This is shot at f/1.2:

Finally a picture of my dog. She managed to stand still long enough for me to test manual focus with this lens (which as you probably know uses focus-by-wire to move the glass inside the barrel). I'm quite sure that f/1.2 at this distance was less DoF than even my Eg-S focus screen can show, but the results came out OK! Again, f/1.2:

I can't wait to have some real subjects to take photos of... I think there is a long learning-curve ahead of me with this lens :-)

Cheers,
Steve

Cool, thanks

Love the bokeh-o-meter, very good.
Don't know how you keep that carpet clean with a dog in the house! :D

Congrats, and it will sit nicely with your 5DII, but please please please resist the urge to shoot everything at F1.2 :)

I will try... I'll just shoot with whatever DoF is right for the shot. But you've gotta love f/1.2, right? :-) I'm a sucker for subject isolation hence trying to cull any lens slower than f/2 :)

Oh go on, he's allowed to for a bit at least :D

You have a week or 2's grace, after that you have to start stopping down

Enjoy the new toy!

Enjoy the new toy!

Whatever we say, he's gonna do it, you have to, all we can do is manage the withdrawal symptoms when he starts shooting at other apertures ;) :)

Looks like an awesome lens from those shots :)

Definitely on my wish list :)

Congrats on the new lens!

When will you be listing the other lenses for sale?

I just got a PM telling me off and deleting my post, as the rules say "Trading outside the classifieds forums is prohibited."

I can't sell them here I'm afraid because of the 100 post requirement on the for sale forum. They're listed elsewhere. If I can't sell them there, I'll list them here once I am eligible to post them. Hope that helps and isn't too vague!

Congratulations. You'll never want to leave the house without it.

Here's a few shots taken with the same lens, just messing about at a friends house one evening! No processing just straight from the camera. Enjoy it, it's an excellent bit of kit :)
