Im hoping to get a new lens after christmas but can decide between the too. Has anyone had any/both of them. They are

tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 di ld macro around £150-180

and

Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG Macro Lens around £200-£250

Is it worth paying the extra for the extra 42mm?
Anyone?
Thanks
Gav

Surley someone has used one of these lenses ? ANYONE?

Gav

I have been using the Tamron since october and have been very pleased with it so far, although haven't got as much use as I'd hoped out of it due to the weather.

I used to use a sigma 70 - 300 at work, so not the same lens you mentioned, but in terms of image quality they were both much of a muchness although the sigma was a little faster at auto focussing.

It really depends what you want it for, the extra 42mm will make the sigma much more versatile I would think.

Oh and by the way, my wife says she bought me the tamron from play.com for £130 new.

Thats great thanks. Well i want to get into Macro mainly i think, so would the extra mm's be worth the extra ££

I have had both and personally I think the 70 - 300 is better than the 28 -300, the 28 - 300 is such a compromise with such a zoom range in a budget lens.

Just my 2p worth.

If your after getting in to macro I would recommend looking at a proper 1:1 dedicated macro lens.

Anything you can reccomend. Im on a budget **** is why i thought about the tamron.

Forget about either of these lenses for macro work, their Minimum focus distance are 150 cm for the tamron and although significantly better at 50 cm for the sigma, neither would be classed as a macro lens, even though it says macro on the side. The sigma is also quite slow at 300mm, being f6.3, even though it fools the camera into thinking its f5.6

If you are primarily looking at macro, then how about the tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens, great lens and very affordable. If your looking for a zoom lens, then you can't go wrong with the canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 USM IS, but its abit more than your budget.

cool thank for that. woth keeping an eye on. Would it be ideal to use a flash with it?

The macro or zoom?

A couple of macro websites to help you out with info

And don't dismiss the 2nd hand market, if you look around, you can pick up a few gems, would recommend TP forums, Mifsuds, Ffordes, Park Cameras, Camtech or MPB as good sources, plus rough ideas on price as well.

i actually meant with the macro. ill have a look at them sites thanks. An i was considering the 90mm but i would have to be second hand atm as money is tight.
Thanks again Pete

I would highly recommend the Tammy 90mm f/2.8 macro as well, I love mine.

I would also recommend the Canon 70-300mm IS USM which can be had second hand for about £100 more than the Tammy. I have not used the Tammy but I can tell you that the Canon 70-300 is a fantastic lens for the money.

cool thanks. Im on abit of a budget at the moment. With christmas etc, so ill see what i can find.
