The joy of getting a new (to me) vintage - I suppose we have to call them that now - Nikkor Ai-s 50/1.4 almost instantly crushed on discovering all the defects the seller totally omitted from his description.
Obvious signs of a previous botched repair: stripped screw heads on the mounting ring; missing screw on the inner barrel, noticeable 'clonk' when focusing and a corresponding image wobble when viewing, no doubt caused by the missing screw. Massive file marks which are the obvious result of a repair from when that missing screw worked its way loose and jammed the lens...

Now awaiting seller response to my request for refund/return or partial refund/keep - the optical performance of the lens is fine...

*update*
Seller issued a 50% refund. I'll use this lens until I can find a better 50/1.4 at a reasonable price then move it on at the discounted price (with an accurate description and better photos this time) so that I break even.

My Gosh. 50%? Why not a full refund?

I've had a lens or two from this shop on evil bay, his stuff may be relatively expensive but the condition of the lenses maybe justifies the prices.

BTW. I have the 50mm f1.4 AI-S and the earlier Nippon Kogaku 50mm f1.4.

Because I'm keeping it (until I sell it on). Even if it was complete scrap, it would still be worth something for parts.
Optically it's fine as I said.

It sounds like something I wouldn't entertain keeping at any price as these lenses are easy enough to get hold of but if your happy enough that's all that counts.

It'll keep me going through the series of film tests I want to carry out this week and that's good enough. I've already found a replacement... Your link was useful though and the prices are comparable to what I'm finding here in Germany - obviously there's now customs and tax to add though...

Sorry, I didn't realise you were in Germany, I'm in the UK and try to limit my buying to UK suppliers to avoid tax issues and higher delivery charges.

If it helps... I have a number of film era 50mm's and the Nikon 50mm f1.4 AI-S is certainly one of the best.

Yup. Though not quite as good as my old Summicron lenses, which I sold along with my Leica M6 two years ago, saying "I'll never shoot film again!"
*sigh*
