New lens for my D40

Hi folks,
Been using my D40 with kit lens now for a while and want to start looking at something longer. I want as cheap as possible, scratch that, best value! I'm looking at 55-200 or 55-300. The Nikon AF-S 55-200 is around £150 online, some slightly cheaper. I want to know if there's a cheaper autofocus sigma HSM or similar. Also want to know if it's worthwhile springing for a 55-300 lens.

What do I need to be spending?

I'm no great expert, infact I only have knowledge learnt on here..... What are you planning on shooting?
 
you can get the nikon af-s 55-200vr off ebay for about £120 new....but as said all depends on what you're shooting, the Sigma HSMs will be a lot more than £150 though.
 
I think If I were in you position, I might also consider the 70-300VR AF-S. Now iirc, it's a lens closer to the £200 mark, but optically, I think at this price it's hard to beat.

As for how much you should be spending, that really isn't the point :). How much you should be spending is entirely dependent on bank balance imho :D

As for what is the best value for money, I'd say the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 is probably the best value for money, but as it's close to £400, its not really worth considering at this stage :)

Thanks guys. It seems it may be worth me stretching to the 70-300 for £200, although this is a lot mroe than the £130 I'll be able to get the 55-200 for. I shoot a variety of things, but this will mainly be for wildlife I think. I can't stretch to a really expensive fast lens, so I'll know I'll be somewhat limited.

Try DigitalDepot, he's on this site. He gave me a very good deal on my 55-200 AFS VR lens, and was very helpful. I am very pleased with my lens, but I think for wildlife you would find the 70-300 better, as I have tried to snap birds on my birdtable which is about 7 metres from my window, and they are still too small.
