Hi All
I am not very experienced in Photography but own a Canon 40D and I am looking for a new all in one lens. I keep arriving back at the tamron 18-270 VC. A few questions if you don't mind answering would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone have any experience of this lens at all and could anyone recommend where to buy please?

I have looked on Ebay, but don't fancy it coming from Hong Kong due to import duty etc. Also looked at Jessops online and am hearing different stories about liquidation etc. Finally found Simply Electonics and would like to know if they are good or not. Or is there a local retailer that is very good on pricing as I am looking to pay around £400.

Really appreciate any advice

Thanks;)

Hi. I would say for £400 you should consider a 2nd hand 70-200 f4 L lens. The image quality is outstanding from it. What are you planning on shooting the most? This too will dictate what focal length you will need. 18-270 admittedly covers a large focal area and would probably cover all your needs. I only have the 70-200 and whilst I do miss having a wide angle, the restriction is worth it from an image quality perspective..and also makes me think more about my composition etc as I have to compensate.

As for Jessops..I don't think you should worry too much. Their finance side is done by someone else I believe. Can't speak for Simply electronics.

I would have to agree with Grayman. I picked up my 70-200F4L for a little under £400 from this forum a year or so ago and it produces some fantasic photos. I'm assuming you already have the wide end covered with your current lens.

No need to worry about Jessops. The stores were all sold to a private finance consortium last year. The liquidation stories you've read are about the old holding company being wound up (because it isn't holding anything now).

Simply Electronics is a grey importer. Some manufacturers won't honour warranties on grey imports. I don't know about Tamron's policy specifically though.

As said previously, Camera Price Buster is a good place to compare the prices from most of the top retailers.

Thanks Guys

I currently have the kit lens (17-85 ) and a tele lens (70-300 IS USM) and I was looking at getting the one size fits all. It is frustrating sometimes when you want a little more reach on a quick shot. I did look at the 70-200 but got a bit worried about being such an amateur and having pro equipment. (All the gear, no idea syndrome)

My line of thought was that I will get my compositions right first and then see where on the focal length I spend most of my time. My wife uses it as well and she does not like lens changing.

It's good news about Jessops then :)

erm where is local ?

try http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ or look in the for sale threads on here

Also Jessops do interest free for 6 months if you wanted something a bit more than £400

Also I have a 40d with this on it - works well.

Hi Local is West london, and thanks very much for the link. I try not to borrow money though as I would rather pay outright and know its done in the case of the 0%. So would you recommend the Sigma as a good walkaround?

Hi Grayman

Thanks for your response. Is this the only lens that you use? I would like it for Portraits etc, but don't you need a wide for landscapes etc?

Hi Stewart
Thanks also for your reply. Thanks for clarifying the Simply question. I think if I'm buying new I would prefer that it comes with the proper warranty. Ebay ones are offering 7yr warranties from Canada, but I don't think I would touch that with a bargepole!

I've got a 40D and quite a few different lenses. The one I use most is the Canon 18-200mm IS because it is so convenient as a walk about lens. I do have longer focal length lenses, but I only use these for wildlife and I don't miss the additional length for general purpose use. The beauty of using Canon is that the DPP software recognises the lens and makes the necessary corrections for the lens at the settings you used. For me the benifits of the software outway the additional 70mm focal length of the Tamron.

Just when I thought that I had it cracked.

erm as of yesterday - the 17-40 became my walkabout lens as I am trying to do more landscape work. Been out today - got nothign to show and had to restrain myself from grabbing he 100-400L and shooting the wildlife.

That said, the 18-200, has shot some informal weddings, been on holiday 4 times, been the walkabout for the last 1 1/2 years, and no complaints. whilst it may suffer from a little distortion, I have found it to be a good compromise in the £ v quality stakes

Thanks Guys

Finally decided to stick with the 18-270 and thanks to you chaps have found a couple of places on Camerapricebuster that do good deals.

I also got a second user 11-18 Tamron today so will be out test driving these in London for the Chinese New Year celebrations next Sunday:)

yep, unfortunately it is at the moment. I don't really do landsacapes, but you are right a wide would be better. However, there are some nice landscapes with a 70-200mm..
