Had to go the PO today (luckily right by my work) to pick up my new (to me anyway) 28-105 f3.5/4.5 from fleabay USA. And of course, I got stung twenty odd quid for the VAT and clearance. I have never ever got away with it, should have expected it really!
Anyway, I have a nice 28-105 of the older type that I've been after, and I want to play! What can I do to test if it is as sharp as a japanese sword or as dull as toothache? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Phil.

I'm sure there are other and better ways, but as a start..

Photograph a brick wall square on, then turn camera upside down and shoot it again. By turning the camera around for one image you are effectively comparing the opposite diagonal of the lens - ie in the images the top left of both images will have been taken with the top left and bottom right sector of the lens.

Compare the image from corner to corner too.

Shoot a series of shots at all apertures too, to see where the lens performs well and badly.

generally i dont like zooms
but this is one i realy like and have kept

not to cumbersome a good range, easy macro and i like the results

get out and get some photos, enjoy yourself...:)

Good idea percy, thank you, may get the opp to do this tomorrow in the office.

stop worrying and get out and take pics, if theyre really not good then worry.
Oh, I'm not worried neil, just curious! Already fired off a few tests and it looks fine.. can't wait to get out with it, the bokeh is meant to be very good.
