New Lens Day: Pulled the trigger on a Canon 35L!

I've been coveting a 35L for a while. I love my 50L, but I feel like sometimes at weddings I'd like something a little wider for tight situations like brides getting ready and packed receptions.

I was almost tempted to buy a Sigma 35A but was ultimately put off by all the reports of focusing issues. I got the 35L for a bit less than the cheapest grey import prices I've seen for the Sigma. I hadn't realised how badly the euro was doing vs the pound, so was surprised to find lots of really good prices on used lenses on the continent! I bought mine from a guy in the Netherlands and it should be with me shortly.

Really looking forward to trying this lens out, hopefully the beautiful weather will continue for a few more days!

In the long run, I feel like I might end up going the 35/85 route for weddings, or I might just add a 135L for an odd trinity of 35/50/135. I do love the 50L, apart from the times I have to discard my favourite shot from a sequence due to it having misfocussed ;)

Anyone else picked up some new glass this week? :)

I'm just awaiting the arrival of an old Soviet Lenkinap 50mm f/1.2. It'll be £12 worth of spherical aberrations and should be fun to play with but it's very unlikely to replace my other 50/1.2.

Interesting you mentioned about focus issue. But I think most of the issues are eliminated with the USB dock... I am about to buy the sigma myself :). So shall report back.

I'm not sure the dock will fix it, because from what I've read the 4 adjustments in the dock for the 35A are 3 at very close to MFD where people report the least issues, then only one adjustment covering 2m-infinity. From what people said, they could use this adjustment to make it accurate either at 2m or infinity, but not both! Also, others have reported general inconsistencies, e.g. front focusing heavily sometimes and backfocusing at others, even at the same focal distance. People also report it working differently under different lighting. I'm sure some people get good copies, or it works well on some bodies, but I'm not prepared to go through all that hassle and uncertainty personally! A shame, as when it does work it looks like it produces really great results. Consistency and reliability aremore important to me, so I went with the L which has proven itself for more than a decade now. All that said, good luck with yours and please do let us know how it works for you :-)

I swapped my rx100 for an 85 f1.8 and it's greeeeeeAt (like frosties' Tony the Tiger!)

With the Canon Cashback; Quidco; Credit Card Cash back etc it's costing me less than £300 to change so a no brainer and the 16-35 is reputed to be so much sharper so I'm hoping that I'll be doing Tony the Tiger impressions tomorrow night too!

Yeah, I thought I'd swap the rx100 as it wasn't getting lots of use.

I wanted the more expensive f1.4 (1100!!!) but that can wait (lottery win?) and having an 85 which has af and is sharp at f1.8 is great.

The nikons hold their value too so it's a good investment!!

Look forward to seeing some shots with your new lens!!

Good choice sir, when I first got my 35L I was a fun learning curve, had to have it focus aligned by canon because it was soft, after that it's now stellar and my trusted go to lens .
 
Hi guys - post some images would you of your favourite shot with this lens please. I almost bought one earlier in the year…
