Morning All,

Recently all my gear was stolen in a burglary and I'm now at a point where I'm replacing what I had. Due to the way the insurance is being resolved, some items have been replaced direct from WEX, others I'm being given a payout to replace myself.

The new kit I currently have:

5D3,
7D2,
70-200 2.8 is mk2 (replaces the Mk1 which was stolen)

The kit I am still to replace included a 70-300L which had become my go-to motorsport lens.

What I'm debating is whether to replace the 70-300, or to just use a 1.4x iii extender on the new 70-200, then put a 400mm 5.6 prime in my line up.

I was looking at whether I can stretch to a new 100-400 mk2 but in all honesty I've have to cut at least one other lens out of my lineup to fund it.

How does the 70-200 mk2 with extender compare to the 70-300L? I know the weight will be significantly higher but how is the IQ of the combo at 280mm vs the 70-300l at 300mm?

Or in my situation, would you go for the 100-400 at take the financial hit?

Cheers,

DC

Unfortunately I haven't used any of the lenses you mention so can only rely on their reputations but I know which I would do. Although the 100-400 looks a great lens, I would probably go down the TC and 400 5.6 route, this way you will have 70-200 f2.8, 98-280 f4, 400 f5.6 and 560 f8. As you know all options will keep AF.
Alternately the 100-400 would cover all focal lengths without swapping lenses, but will not be as good when it comes to poor light or for a shallow DOF

have you considered a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 ?

I did consider that a couple of years ago, but the recent models are out of my price range. As it turns out, I've now bought my non-telephoto setup which leave just the right budget for a 400mm 5.6 prime so I'm 99% sure that's what I'll be going for.

My 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4x iii extender can cover the range of that Sigma and a 400mm prime will give me the best possible IQ at that focal length. I've spent too long looking at amazing trackside shots on this forum only to see that they're taken with a 5D3 & 400mm 5.6 combo. It seems only right that I get the prime and give myself no excuses for not getting the shots I want ;)

I use the 5d iii and the 400mm f5.6 it's a beauty :) you won't be disappointed ... It's a little patchy at 560mm with my mismatched ancient sigma 1.4 tc but still works well enough... With the real one it's probably fine .... 400 on the 7Dii 70-200 on the 5d and you got a good Motorsport rambling set up :D

Hi David hope you're sorted mate.

I've been looking into this new Sigma 150-600mm lens. Looks very interesting and at the price could be worth a punt, I'm thinking of getting one just to play with - covers almost everything for motorsport :-)

You won't be disappointed with the 400 5.6

It's a great lens , idea for motorsport , the 2.8s are obviously faster but with a 7d2 you can just ramp up the iso if it's dull

Shame the 400mm did not work out.

I had been debating the new 100-400L (I hated to MK1) or a 400mmf5.6 for motorsport for a while but ended up getting a good deal on a 300f4 on Saturday. I tried it out at Brands on Sunday for the GT Championship and it was spot on with all the reach I really needed round the GP circuit. It felt longer than my 70-300mmL for some reason and I had to crop very few shots. I might still get a x1.4 converter for it for motorbikes or stick to my 70-200mm with a kenko x2 converter which worked very well but was heavy panning all day. I can't see me taking the 70-300L to a track again even though it is very capable and has been attached to my camera 90% of the time for 3 years. I will try the 300mm out on Dragonflies in flight and if I get on with manually focusing it the 70-300L will probably go and I never thought that would happen.

If you have a x1.4 converter already then 300mmf4 might be worth considering.
