Managed to drop/destroy my 18-105 lens, what instead?

Obvious answer is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC. Did you use the tele end of the lens? If so then i don't know of any other lens with that range and a faster aperture. Other option would be the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 contemporary lens.

I have a 50mm prime for low light use but I was using the full range of the 18-105 so I guess the answer is yes, although the 17-70 (rather than the 17-50) seems to be a reasonable compromise option in terms of cost/reach vs quality?

Well Sigmas new lenses are definately improved since their new 'global initiative' or whatever it's called.

I've had 2 18-105's and neither really floated my boat tbh. Replaced one with the Tamron 17-50 vc which was a nice step up which in turn was replaced with the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 and then this time around i replaced it with the Sigma 18-35 f1.8.

Depending on your budget as David has suggested the 17-50 non VC is a very niec lens.

I have recently bought a 28-105AFD lens which I am also happy with.

Couple of suggestions, 16-85mm VR - much underrated imo, and the new 18-140mm VR from what little I've seen of the latter it looks fine and a good range, however my own first choice would be the 16-85.

Done it myself, wrote of body the camera and the lens :(,as for replacement as above the 16-85 or 18-200 :)

I assume you don't have accidental damage option on your home insurance?

If you do you may need to dig the rmenants of the lens out from the bin.

Considered it for 2 secs but in reality the lens cost vs my excess would make it not worth the hassle.

I suppose it comes down to a couple of things. If you wanted something faster you're likely to take a hit on zoom range, or if you want the zoom range you're likely to take a hit on the aperture. There's plenty of options out there, it just depends on how much you want to spend :)

18-55
18-70
16-85
17-55
18-140
18-135?
18-200
18-300
Tamron do 18-270 I think too
Tamron 17-50 vc and non vc
Sigma 18-70

The list goes on! Don't feel too bad about the lens though, if it hadn't snapped it could have sent more shockwaves into the camera causing more damage so every cloud has a silver lining. Accidents happen and thank your lucky stars the body is also okay :)

If it's a Nikon, the (now old bust still very good for the money!) 18-70 would be my choice as long as it doesn't leave a huge gap in focal length previously filled by the 70-105 area on the now dead zoom. Of course, had the old lens been of sturdier construction, it could have taken the body out as well as the lens... Ignore the above suggestion if you need the VR.

Not remotely technical enough to try that!

I'm used to fiddly stuff like that better than throwing a lens away

Well I managed to grab a reasonably priced 18-200 today in another forum so although not ideal I guess considering my stupidity caused the issue I've ended up with pretty much the same 'quality' lens with a little more reach! Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated.

I replaced my 18-105 with an 18-200, and it's a great all rounder

I use an 18-200 on my V-1. Covers most eventualities other than wide angles (which aren't the 1 series's strongpoint anyway!)

I did pretty much the same with an 18/105 attached to a D200 a few years back, would never have a plastic mount again.
Replaced mine with and 18/70 and still have it, a cracking lens for the price and you can pick them up cheap S/H these days
