Hi all,

I will (at some stage this week) take delivery of a Medion Akoya 17.3" laptop with Windows 7 (64 bit) installed. Obviously Windows 8 is only a few weeks old but there's an upgrade offer costing £15.

I have a monitor calibrator (ColorMunki Photo) and Colourchecker passport. The screen is apparently LED backlit (HD though not full 1080p), so can the ColorMunki still work, is it Windows 8 compatible, if not, do companies like Adobe create drivers pretty quickly?

Lightroom 4 - has anyone here installed this on Windows 8? If so, are any new drivers needed?

Apologies for so many questions, but I may delay installing Windows 8 if none of the above work at the moment and wait until any teething problems etc are ironed out.

Cheers :)

you wont need drivers for lightroom, you only need drivers for hardware.

win 7 and 8 drivers should be cross compatible, you might want to check the colormonki site though (adobe wont provide any drivers, again theyre not hardware vendors).

Cheers Neil

Had a quick look on ColorMunki website and the latest software is version 1.0.2 which came out in 2010 but no mention on whether it works with Windows 8.

Any feedback on anyone who has the same hardware as me and have recently upgraded to Windows 8 would be most grateful. I may just keep the laptop on Windows 7, assuming ColorMunki and others work on that...

Do you need Win 8?
To me it seems dysfunctional but maybe it's just resistance to change

Hi,

I wouldn't say my immediate thoughts are that I "need" it. I'm in the process of researching what the new OS does to get the bigger picture. I'm just open to what the latest stuff does differently and how it can help me (especially with image processing) for the future.

The new laptop has 8GB of DDR3 RAM (mainly for Lightroom), i5 processor and USB 3.0 ports for my USB 3.0 Lexar card reader and realise what these specs will do in enhancing my photo processing but will be pointless if my devices don't currently work on Windows 8 and will simply keep Windows 7 64 bit installed. Just weighing things up, preparing for the day when the laptop arrives. :woot:

The Medion apparently comes with an LED backlit display. Does the ColorMunki calibrate these types of screens effectively?

Lightroom works fine on Windows 8. If you're the kind of person who will freak out because the start menu looks a bit different, then don't bother, otherwise, take the upgrade and enjoy the explorer enhancements and performance improvement :)

I would second that. Most image processors work fine with W8.

I think there is a way to make it look just like w7, which is probably a lesser evil :gag:

TN screens typically do not calibrate well and not really suited for color critical work. You may wish to get an IPS external display

Yep, imagine they don't. Haven't even tried yet, but I think the main aim was to buy reasonably specced laptop with i5 processor and 8gb RAM etc and rig up a decent monitor via HDMI (I have a thread running on here about recommendations for a 24 inch HD monitor.

Thanks for the advice!
