Hi and Merry Christmas to everyone, we currently have a MBP 13" 2012 non retina display. Was thinking about getting a 27" iMac 5k but can't really justify it at the moment, Newborn on the way and not really the room for a dedicated computer desk.
Have recently upgraded the MBP with 16gb of RAM, which has made a pretty big difference in performance on Photoshop.
Can anyone recommend a laptop (any brand) that would give better performance than our current MBP? Don't really want to spend over £600 Have had a look online at the sales and some OK laptops around £5-600 mark but all have a crappy 5400rpm hard drive :(

Has anyone seen any that might be worth upgrading too?

Many thanks :)

Can you not upgrade the HDD to an SSD on your MBP ? Would certainly be cheaper than investing in a new laptop, especially as you've recently upgraded the memory...

Think my other half is a little worried about only having a small amount of disk space, my uncle removed his optical drive to fit a 2tb hard drive and also a 128gb ssd. I still use my cd drive though so that's not an option and don't wanna faff around with an external. We also have a western digital my cloud 3gb storage but it's annoying cause you can't view raw thumbnails on it :( so would be very annoying having to open every file to find a file I want :/ also the 13" screen is a little small

The price of SSD's is coming down, but they are still more expensive than the equivalent HDD.

If you are wanting a larger screen as well, then it looks like you are going to have to upgrade...

You could opt for an external monitor to help with the smallness of the screen. The other option is to just upgrade the current HD., to a bigger one. Forger the SSD option. However look at the costs involved. You could be better off buying another laptop. Can't give you a recommendation as you'd have to go the Windows route , and I'm all Mac so have little experience lately of that option.

To be honest a lot of the mid-range laptops have fairly poor displays. You are probably better off sticking with what you have.
The SSD premium on a large hard disk makes sense compared to ponying up for a fast laptop with a decent display.

I've decided in the end to go with a 15 inch mbp and then look for a 4k monitor :) will also use the monitor for cod on ps 4 :)
This way I'll still have portability and the specs on the 15 inch mbp seem impressive :)

Well that's a complete U turn from your original post :D and blown your budget completely out the water :).

Enjoy your new toys

Was more the fact that I would end up regretting not buying the 27" iMac if I spent over 1k on a Windows laptop, this was is a good compromise I think :) won't use the dedicated screen much, just for games etc, and be useful sometimes for photo editing :)

Thanks
