Hi Guys, i`m looking for a decent digital SLR Kit to photograph my son playing ice hockey. Anyone got any ideas and what would be the best size lens for the job ?:)

I recently pocked up a canon 450d and I'm really pleased with it, but everyone is different.
I would suggest going to a local camera shop and getting a feel for a few different camera's in your budget.

Don't know how far away from the action you would normally be but the sigma 70-200 f2.8 is a good lens and will give you a decent range. The Canon equivalent is better but much more expensive.

What ever feels right will be right in terms of the body. Go and have a play and see what feels good as they will all take decent pictures if you use them properly.

As for lenses that is a very difficult question. Firstly you will need to decide what length you will need , then you need to consider is it indoors, outdoors, fast moving etc as these will all have a big impact on the choice you make.

Have a look through the critique section as this may well give you clues as to what type of lens you may need.

Good luck

I`ve already got a Sigma 70-210 lens from my old Minolta SLR, just need a new Digital body to go with it. Been pricing the Canon 450`s today at Currys and Comet, about £500. Looking on ebay you can get them with multiple accessories for that price. Is it safe to buy camera equipment on the net ?

I agree, go have a hold to see what's most comfortable in your hands.

However, the Sony a200 is a bargain still. I'd recommend one for anyone's first DSLR.

If you've got a minolta lens it should fit on the sony. What mount is it?

the 70-210 that you have? How fast is it? ie what is the widest aperture?

Look for a f/x.x number - how small is x.x ?

Shooting indoors you will need some fast glass, either a zoom or a prime. The 70-200 2.8 is a good option, I don't think your lens will perform very well at 210 indoors trying to capture action. I have the sigma 70-200 2.8 and can recommend it for indoor action.

Check out flickr, I just had a quick look and there are some examples using a similar lens so it is possible.

Shooting Ice Hockey indoors you will need an F2.8 lens. 70-200 f.2.8 with tele converter may not be enough as the puck is minute. Also shooting through dirty plexi-glass will be a nightmare. I say forget the camera, rrelax with a couple of beers and enjoy the action.
