Hi all

I posted up a few pics of my hamster about a week back here but didnt get round to introducing myself like I said I would so here goes:

Me and my girlfriend 'snaphappybear' recently brought and share a Nikon D3100

Also just finished reading through the book 'from snapshots to great shots' - Jeff Revell. Really excellent book and the assignments at the end of each chapter are so useful for putting things into practice.

The only other time Iv used a DSLR was a nikon D50 which I borrow off an uncle but didnt know what to do with it and just used 'Auto Mode'. After handing it back I was hungry to get more involved..

I've got a handle of the basics now I hope, the exposure triangle and all that, still not sure how the meter modes differ/works in practice but its coming all together slowly.

Here's a few pics of the first time I used A and S Pro Modes up North last weekend, enjoy I hope you's like them and please crit (I want to get better of course)

First two are of my girfriends dad's cat called 'Jack' (he was hanging round the back door) the next two of the dog called 'Taz' (we took him on a little walk) I then practiced a final close up on a window legde in the front room.

Hi there,
Im also new to the forum, have just self thought myself the basics etc and definalty dont know anything about the meters and exposure locks, so would be cool to see if anyone has any help regarding these.
Love the very first photo of the cat...he looks mischievous

Hi Kate, got the metering modes cracked now, if your photo has a white wall in it or a large area of sky it can trick the sensor in giving the wrong exposure, so you change the metering method as needed - Matrix = takes into account all colours, Centre -Weight = 75% given to 8mm circle, and Spot = about 2.5% of frame on selected focus point.

Thanks Pete and Rob.

im a newbie too....

love the 2nd cat pic...focus on the face looks like he seen a mouse!! breaky for him?? lol

Thanks for the kind welcome too Dave.

I also like the cat photo's the best Tonio, the sun casting down into the narrow side entrance to the backdoor give me some great light and shade effects esp too 'Jacks' Ginger Fur.

I'm going to try and catch more expressions looking away from the camera, think it provides more of an interesting exposure.
