Just got the new cam today, hope to upgrade the kit lens to a sigma 17 - 70DC macro lens. Is this a good upgrade. Also have read that the conversion software in the camera is not so good so its best to shoot in RAW. Now I have elements 5,can this convert and edite RAW files? if not is there any good freeware RAW editing software?

You should be able to edit your RAW files in PSE 5, I know I can edit my Canon ones but I did have to download an updated RAW converter from the Adobe webpage. If you check the Adobe site it will tell you whether you can and also whether there is an update to download for your K10d.

Arguably you are always better shooting raw as it gives you more leeway to pp. It is probably worth asking at the pentax forum on dpreview and I think there is another pentax only site, perhaps pentaxforums? It may be just a matter of adjusting the camera settings to get better jpegs out of the camera. Often dslrs give jpegs that can be disappointing compared to digicams because they apply less processing in camera.
