I've been with my previous ISP for years and years, but recently decided I want a change to a faster service. We don't have cable or fibre so has to be down the old copperwire.

Decided (for various reasons) to go with BT, they said it may vary for the first 10 days or so but if it stays at the current 4 day old speed I'll be a happy chap.

I can only dream of speeds like that!

Likewise down copper wires, however I do get 5MBps from Sky atm but would never go back to BT as when with them before they struggled to supply 1.5MBps to property on same line. (Sucks living in a poor BB service area!)
 
love my speeds from BT, especially the ups (not really comparable as i'm on fibre)!!! do not love BT's customer service though....really upset one of their "overseas" operators when I asked "please don't be offended but can you put me through to someone in the UK so we might be able to have a coherent conversation?"...sigh

We switched to BT recently after another Talk Talk failure. It's fine. Quite slow (around 1.5 mps) but that's more than enough for us.
 
There are quite a few ISPs that offer fibre now. You don't have to suffer BT!
 
Been told by BT that we now have Infinity availability in our area. Currently have max 4mbps down and 500kbps up, Infinity's claiming 60+mb down and 20+mb up.

Really tempted but heard their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Anyone got any experience to help me come to a decision?
 
We had Infinity installed a couple of months ago and it was a totally painless experience. We had a two week wait for an appointment. The router arrived by post a few days before the engineer appointment and the installation was neat and quick. Previously we were getting about 5 meg download with conventional BT broadband, it's now usually 30 meg.

Ahhh BT, the ones who's excuse every time the internet off (and on occasion for weeks at a time) was that my computer was at fault.

So 3 computers all on different operating systems (including Linux) all have the same problem???

Would never go back to them, vile company, terrible pricing and vile customer service.

To the point of speed also think locality must have an effect, since I moved standard broadband with my current provider is getting 12Mbit download, and at times 2Mbit up.

BT offering fibre here (not my current though its scheduled for next year when I asked) but looking back at previous examples of their work, would rather set fire to my own hair.

Wow! That's four times the download speed that plusnet claim for their top FTTC service, but less than 10% of the upload speed. Something odd is going on :suspect:

The figures shown by nick_1981 or antihero are more normal for FTTC.
 
Living on an Island (where cable only handles 8Mb), and with AOL for years I was subjected to 0.5Mb during peak hours.

Recently changed to BT and now get about 6MB during peak times, what a difference it makes to web browsing!
 
I switched from PlusNet (the missus signed up to them before I moved in and we were getting 0.4MB/S with a download limit of 10GB) to Virgin and I couldn't be happier.

We pay for 30MB/S and it is regularly sat at 29MB/S but I have clocked it at just over 31MB/S with unlimited downloads.

And slightly off topic, I've clocked my 3G speed on my iPhone 4S (on Three) at 8.5MB/S with unlimited internet so I'm really happy with that as I use it to tether my iPad.

Is that with VM or BT?? BT's broadband availability isn't showing any plans for it.

They seem to be ignoring huge swathes of Cheshire and Staffs even though they have some of the worst broadband speeds.
 
These threads depress me. I'm lucky to see 6mbps at 4am, let alone daytime or evening speeds!

Stoke don't need it as VM have covered the place in cable so most of us have 50mb already.

I'll check out your checker as it seems more comprehensive than the one I found.
 
I was looking at exactly that bit! Must have been a gremlin as pins were showing for nearby exchanges.
 
Nynex never wanted to put cable in our area and nobody want to put fiber here either :(

We've been offered Infinity before the end of the year, which surprised me because we lived in a rural area, but it's too expensive for us and we don't need, or particualrly want, these speeds.
 
No FTTC here, none planned. There is Virgin in the street, but they don't move packets in a way that I like.
 
I changed to BT Infinity earlier this year. This is sitting in my lounge on the laptop connected wirelessly. No complaints from me seeing as I was suffering with between 1Mb & 2Mb beforehand.

I just did half a dozen more tests to confirm, all came in between 29 - 31 MBps.

I was quoted around 30 MBps and the last time I checked it tended to vary between 26 - 33 MBps depending on the time of day, bear in mind my tests where done in the early hours when there isn't much traffic.
Upload speed has always been abysmal with plusnet, its better than it was though.

I'll admit the upgrade was the best Christmas present I've had for a long time.

You should be getting 30 Mbps not 30 MBps. Your dl speed is showing as nearly 300 Mbps which is nearly 10x faster than it should be!

I do however, had Sky fitting fibre optic connection at end of the month, supposed to be 35mbit download and 6mbit upload, which will do nicely thank you very much :D
 
im getting sky fiber now and its great...

...but might be moving to a 3mb area...

Then don't ;) Certainly don't buy a house if it isn't able to get an adequate internet connection for your needs, it's as important as mains gas or mains drainage (in that the absence can be coped with, but the alternatives aren't as good).
 
This makes for depressing reading being stuck in the slow lane, especially as about 50% of my town has FTTC but I'm in the 50% that does not have it and there is no date I can find when it is even planned. :'(

I'm at 4Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up, same ISP as you. No sign of FTTC coming to my exchange as far as BT are announcing dates for.

It's adequate to my needs as I don't stream video and leave large downloads going overnight, although I can't remember the last time I downloaded anything big enough to need that either.
 
Just checked back on this, thanks for those who posted their experience of BT Infinity - think I'll be signing up tonight :thumbs:

Incidentally, has anyone else had trouble with these new Virgin Media Super Hubs?
I never had a days trouble with our old surfboard, but it drops out all the time since installing the hub. Cant see me staying with Vermin for much longer if they dont sort it.

Had mine replaced once due to it dropping out wireless, then the new one started dropping out 10-11 times a day, then it started resetting itself randomly. And loosing all the settings I'd put in.
In the the end, their advice was to use it as a modem only and supply my own wireless router.
Thankfully I had one lying around and it's not been too bad since. It drops out about one a week now.
Pretty stupid though, they expect you to supply your own equipment cos theirs isn't upto the job.
They also told me they can't guarantee a wireless service, despite the advert for the superhub claiming how good it isn't wireless and how your entire home will be wirelessly connected. It doesn't mention wired connectivity until the very last bit of text in the small print the bloke on the phone got a bit stuck when I pointed this out.
