Anyone any experience of the new iPad 4?
New lightning connector seems a bit of a pain, needs adapters to use the 30-pin connectors and allegedly has a chip to stop use of third-party offerings.
Is it really faster, better?

Just got a 4 after having a 1 for two years. Much faster and no crashes

Mine seems much faster to the older iPads that i have used. Only thing i plug into mine is the charger and the official lightning to sd cad reader so no experience with converting to the older 30pin stuff.

Can't answer bu I just ordered the 32Gb Wifi. :)

How is the screen resolution - is it as sharp as it's made out to be?

Yes, it's virtually impossible to discern pixels, put your eye against the screen and still none. Must really upset the pixel peepers ;)

Got to admit it looks great. Really makes images pop.

my dad has an ipad4, my daughter has a ipad2, i have a nexus 10.

compared to the ipad2 the screen is significantly sharper - the ipad4 itself is a bit heavier than the ipad2 but it's not hugely different. the device feels faster, the ipad2 does stutter with some web pages and if you have a few tabs open does get a bit slow. the ipad4 doesn't suffer from this.

now, if you are not invested hugely in the apple eco system then the nexus 10 is an option. personally, i love mine. out of the box, and a few reviews you read might mention it - the browser was a bit laggy but since an update it's very smooth now.

the main thing i love about my nexus is how you have full control over your device, as i've said in a previous post - i use mine for browsing the web and playing old emulators - it works great.

ergonomically, i think the nexus 10 feels nicer to hold than the ipad4, the keyboard is better (imo) and android now has pretty much all the good stuff that was once an apple exclusive - everything i need is on android - i wouldn't hesitate in recommending the nexus 10, in fact, i'd probably recommend it over an ipad 4.

Thanks for the comments so far

I've got the new Ipad and absolutely love it. I mainly bought mine for reading magazines and so glad I did even if I do have to wait a few days for them to arrive. The text is easy to read and is so clear you don't always have to pinch to be able to read them, another bonus is interactive magazines, The top gear magazines is amazing, slide shows of pictures, videos and other clever feature such as sliding your finger opens the doors etc.
I find it really fast, just have to remember to double click the home button and clear the apps otherwise it slows down but it takes a lot of apps that you've used to get to that point.
Hope this helps abit

the ipad 2 is so good i just got one with more memory
the screen is great but then i dont like over clean or hd thats not how we see as humans.

people seem to hung up on these minor things

i see no need for the 4 i prefer the weight of the 2 as well
i also have a mini and i like that screen as well.

if you want to save get one from apple refurbished you wont tell the differance.

Isn't the mini screen the same or very similar to the 4 ... 'retina display'?

Mini is not retina screen. Same resolution as ipad 2 I believe which would appear better on a smaller screen.

iPad mini has the exact same resolution as the iPad 2, being a little smaller it just appears a little sharper, but it is still significantly fuzzier than than the iPad 3 or 4.

Something not touched on which makes the iPad 2 a poor alternative (it was great in its day, but anyone buying an iPad 2 new now needs their head read) is the lack of RAM in the 2.

One of my major gripes was having 4 or 5 tabs open on the iPad 2 and switching between them caused them to reload due to a lack of memory, wiping out a page of text I had just written :bang:

The iPad 4 has double the RAM so doesn't have this problem, I've had 10 tabs open, the iPad 4 still retains them in RAM without any need to refresh.

As I said gramps the ipad 2 is superb mine never crashes, always keeps all my pages open never looses text etc.etc.
In Europe it proved itself over and over again I can afford the 3 but stuck with the 2 for good reason.
I have many things open at one time photos load quick etc.etc.

Beware fan boys who need to justify their expenditure.

Thanks all, decision made :)

Gramps, if you are going iPad 4, see if any CarphoneWarehouse has stock in your area (within 30 miles) and then get Currys, PC World or John Lewis to price match them.

They are doing a 10% off sale which includes iPads.

Meant to add, another huge plus for the 4 is battery life, I used to end the day with between 10%-20% battery on the iPad 2, same kind of use (maybe slightly more because reading magazines is much more pleasurable on the Retina screen) and the iPad 4 is still around 40%-50%.

If you do go for a model after the 2 make sure it's the very latest 3 as they are more valuable than the first 3 that came out.

What was the difference ? How do you tell the difference?

There is no such thing, maybe he is confusing the 3 which wasn't out all that long (around 7 months) with the 4 which was released in November.

Easiest way to tell a 4 from a 3 is to check the connector fitting. A 3 will have the older 30 pin connector, and a 4 will have the new lightning connector.

Other than looking up the model number on Apples site it's pretty difficult to cosmetically tell them apart.

Cheers Dave,

I have the 3 but was not aware of the earlier and later models. Anyway I'm a bit perturbed now to discover the 3 was only out for such a short period...I may contact Apple to let them know my feelings...I may well have waited and purchased the 4 instead.

A lot of 3 owners were pretty upset when the 4 was announced in October, I read that Apple ran a program for exchanges for anyone who had bought a 3 in the 30 days previous to the announcement (IIRC).

There were quite a few threads and discussions at places like MacRumours around the time of the launch.

It was also all over the news! Although the announcement of the Mini kind of overtook that

Ipad 2 and ipad mini are more or less the same device. They share the same internals just a different case and screen as far as I know.

i have been using the mini its superb.

the thing is so light and small you can take it anywhere.
now i have worked out this save a page to read later it means ive allways something to do when in the hospital etc.

some people think they know it all

Sigh, why did I click to view the cack this person posts.

The iPad launched on the 2nd of November is known as the 4th generation iPad, it is not the same as the 3rd generation iPad, and there are no 4th generation iPads in the Apple Store clearance.

iPad (4th generation)

The fourth-generation iPad

Units sold 3 million iPad Minis and fourth-generation iPads were shipped in the first weekend of sale.[11]
Operating system Original OS: iOS 6.0.1
Predecessor iPad (3rd generation)

The fourth-generation iPad (marketed as iPad with Retina display, colloquially referred to as the iPad 4)[14][15] is a tablet computer produced and marketed by Apple Inc. The fourth-generation iPad features new and upgraded components such as the Apple A6X chip, and the Lightning connector, which was introduced on September 12, 2012. It ships with iOS 6.0, which provides a platform for audio-visual media, including electronic books, periodicals, films, music, computer games, presentations and web content.

It was announced at a media conference on October 23, 2012 as the fourth-generation of the iPad line, succeeding the third generation iPad, and was first released on November 2, 2012 in thirty-five countries. The device was released throughout December in six other countries including China, India and Brazil. The third generation was discontinued following the fourth's announcement.[16]

The device is available with either a black or white front glass panel and can be purchased with various connectivity and storage options. Storage size options include 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB, the available connectivity options are Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + Cellular with LTE capabilities.

The fourth-generation iPad received primarily positive reviews and was praised for its hardware improvements as well as the retina display, which was also featured in the device's predecessor.

Furthermore benchmarks reveal that the fourth-generation iPad is able to perform CPU reliant tasks twice as fast as its predecessor.

During the first weekend of sales, an aggregated amount of three million fourth-generation iPads and iPad minis were sold.

Stop trying to score points, especially with something you obviously are not that well informed on.

WRONG
The New iPad was indeed the New ipad for all of 7 months and when the mini was released they also released the iPad (4th gen). I just bought the 4th gen one - amazing! Blistering pace and smooth :) Happy :)

I wonder if he'll be back to apologise. I was too stunned yesterday to add to the conversation!

its very simple and there is no need to start making offensive remarks to me becuase you cant understand.

you can not buy a apple i pad4 you can buy a ipad with retina display [4th generation]

you can also buy a new ipad [3rd generation]

thesy are not marked on the back they just say ipad and however big it is.

"those are the apple names for these items"

i just phoned them to confirm

they look similar and are confusing if you arent aware of the change which is why i told him to get the latest version.

"erhaps i am not very good at explaining, but i was trying to make sure gramps didnt buy a new ipad [3rd generation] at the ipad with retina display [4th generation] price."

as and aside Dave1 has an agenda he says one thing and does another,he has now resorted to insulting me.

someone said there's heads needing to be knocked together in here?? Can't believe that, not in a mature, grown up forum surely?!?!?

The 3rd generation ipad released in March 2012 has the same retina display that the 4th generation ipad released in late october/early november 2012 has.

Apple no doubt have no reason to sell the 3rd gen ipad anymore as the 4th gen is basically the same machine but with improved components and connector, hence there only being one "ipad with retina display" in the store.
