Will be taking the plunge in the next week with a apple imac thinking of the 27in but not the 5k screen the difference in price I was going to swap the sata hard disk to the fusion drive one, anyone got experience of this drive and is it worth the upgrade, cheers.
 
I'm about to upgrade my aging iMac for a nice new one next month. I'll be opting for the 5K machine ( 4K video hence the upgrade) . I'll be opting as well for the fusion drive, as from what Ive seen boot times and program loads are a lot quicker. For me that is , well not that important , but a nice thing to have. Plus it also keeps 64Gb of the 125Gb free for data, so you get fast access to it. Now all this depends on if you think it's important. Do you need this extra speed , it's up to you.I have a MBP with SSD drive and the speed it operates at is impressive. Boot is not instantaneous but almost.. Go to an Apple store and see what you think.
 
I sacked of my pac recently built a custom pc that is better IMO
 
Another +1 for the fusion drive. I went from the late 2009 27" model (without fusion) to the late 2014 27" 5K and the drive speed increase is noticeable and pleasing.

Just one thing to check - by the time you've added a fusion drive in, depending on your other options, you're only at around £150 difference between the none-retina / retina version. That's not a lot for a 5K monitor upgrade.
 
what i,ll ad is this, if you go fusion the apple side is very fast, however for me i also use bootcamp and that side is slow on boot, as its on the 3Tb spinning side not the SSD, there are ways to get it working on the SSD but it looks like handwork and I'm not a mac expert.
if i could choose again id get the biggest PCIE drive u can afford 512 or 1tb massive cost i know but super fast and will make bootcamp super fast too.

if you need space then attached the 8TB western digital TB drive
 
You could go for an old Mac Pro 2010. They can be upgraded for graphics cards, memory, hard drives and even the processors fairly easily. You can then pair it with whatever screen you want. Only an idea[emoji3]
 
I bought the late 2013 with 7200rpm sata it's better than previous 21'' 5200rpm drive

For me the 1tb of gpu is the part that hangs a little it would be temping for the new CC Adobe if you increase the graphics

As I am no longer taking part in the LR prerelease forums with out going into specifics (confidentiality clause) the main thing I would look for would be the i7 8 core followed by the gpu ram

If forced I would run from external SSD and put OSX on that
 
There could be some new iMacs released in the next couple of weeks, so if you're thinking of buying, it might be a good idea to wait.

Yes, if you go on line and up spec one of the Retina iMacs, you'll see the delivery date is now towards end of October - rather than the usual couple of days delay. You can still get next day delivery on standard spec machines - suggesting previously that they are running the stock down as a newer version is on it's way.

Personally, for the sake of a couple of weeks, I'd wait and see just to be sure.

With regards to the fusion drive, yes it's certainly an upgrade I would go for if you are looking at the entry level 27" Retina screen
 
Hi guys new iMacs have just been announced! I'm looking at getting a 27" iMac 5K

Is there any benefit of a single SSD over the fusion drive setup?

Where is the best place to buy an iMac? I'll check the refurb store.

Also do you know if I could upgrade the RAM myself?
 
As widely predicted, new iMacs out today including a Retina 21.5" model (4K resolution). Also new keyboard, mouse and trackpad with built in batteries (and enhanced prices :( ).
It looks like the non-Retina display 27" iMac has been discontinued. Fusion drives are still not standard, but extra cost is down to £80.

1TB Fusion Drives now come with 24GB of flash storage rather than the 128GB in previous generations.

Not just that, but actually take a look in the apple online refurb store for discounted models, had both my iMac and MBP from there at hefty discounts! (go to apple website and type refurbished into the search box) :)

A Fusion drive provides additional storage space, a single SSD will be slightly faster but you will have to add external storage sooner.

From the Apple website:

RAM: 8GB (two 4GB) of 1867MHz DDR3 memory; four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible Configurable to 16GB or 32GB

So the 27" RAM is user upgradeable, unlike on the 21.5".
 
So it appears the upgrades for the 27" are the 6th gen processor, a 1TB fusion drive (smaller SSD now) for the mid range one (was entry level previous) and a 2TB fusion drive standard (128gb SSD) on the top spec one, all with upgraded video cards and upgraded screens, still same price as well - my only disappointment is they have increased the standard memory from 8GB...

So...do you buy the mid range one and upgrade the fusion drive to 2TB - which is still cheaper than the top spec one ???

M390 v M395 - not sure what the difference is with the graphics card

Good idea re the SSD - just checked and £80 upgrade as is the 2TB fusion drive on the mid spec one - still approx £200 less than the top spec one...you could then upgrade processor to the i7 and it works out £70 more than the top spec...decisions, decisions...

Yes I looked yesterday reading in Mac forums etc they say the M395 is in a different league the SSDon top model is free it's really close, if you do video I would try splash for the i7

The extra speed of ram should be good as well
 
Sorry for no replies of late been busy with work etc, I placed order through a works scheme as I get a 6% saving just went for normal screen spec 27in variety and normal hard drive 1tb, have had lots of problems with delivery dates etc being changed and then put back last night received e-mail saying the newer mac are out and they have upgraded me to one of the retina 5k screens so happy with that result, it should be being delivered tomorrow night all being well paid additional £15 for this service, but now being told by text being sent by by courier, so who knows what's going on. Will find out in next 24 hours fingers crossed.
 
Can you upgrade the ram yourself on the new iMac 27'' 5K machines?

My sister is in the NHS and brother is a teacher do you know if I would be able to get discount buying direct from Apple?

They can, the NHS discount isn't as good as the educational discount - with NHS discount, she'll need to come with you to store with ID and they'll just give you the discount :)

This is correct, the 27" retains the user-accessible RAM slots (x4). The standard 8GB RAM takes up 2 slots leaving 2 empty.

The slots on the older 21" machines are a right pain to get at because the screen and logic board have to be removed to access them. Replacing a bad RAM module went from a 5 minute job to over an hour.

On the latest 21" machines, the RAM is soldered to the logic board, so upgrades must be chosen at purchase time.

I have been using mid 2010 27" i3 for last five years and decided to upgrade it to 5k just few weeks ago. So I've purchased the top spec i5 (stock) only to find out Apple was updating their iMac line few days after (!!!). Luckily as per 14 days return period it was pretty painless to swap it to a brand new one. And I must admit, it's quite a machine (mostly the 5K screen). All to do now is to wait for RAM to be available on Crucial dot com and upgrade it to 64gb!!!

Supposedly the screen has been updated over the previous retina iMac - have you seen a difference having briefly had the old and now got the new one ?
 
I think You can only notice it when you put them next to each other, although I think the colours are more vivid, especially reds...
