New Imac

Hmmm.. though Tim Cook only says "shortages". Though right now, I'd be happy if they at least released the pricing structure for the different configurations.

News is that the 21.5 inch imac will be on sale this friday.

Macrumours have posted a link to a US supplier for their built to order prices.

I'd better get the lube ready, a 27" with i7 and fusion and 680 gpu is going to sting a bit. :eek:

read it here

holy hell you could build a much better spec pc with a 27" screen for that (assuming like treeman said when they replace the $ sign with £).
Can you get a DVD player with that? ;) :D

Oh dear, I hope those prices are wrong, especially as their idea of exchange rate is to just change the dollar sign to pounds!

Comparing the upgrade prices on the US site to the UK site for the Mac Mini, UK prices seem currently to be 80% of the US price ($300/£240; $250/£200; $100/£80).

For the 'high end' 27 inch iMac, that should make the following:
i7 processor - £160;
680MX graphics - £120;
32Gb Ram - £480;
3Tb HDD - £120;
Fusion drive - £200;
768Gb Flash drive - £1040.

The old model iMac, fully loaded with a spec as follows: 3.4 i7; 16Gb RAM; 2TB HDD + 256 SSD; 6870M graphics... came out at £2729

If my sums are correct... The new iMac with EVERY upgrade, including the SSD, should come out at around £3499. If you take the 3TB Fusion drive instead of the SSD then it should come out around £2799, pretty much the same price as the old model... You're still gaining a lot of spec and only losing the optical drive (I use an external Blu-Ray writer for archiving anyway)... Apart from the SSD which I thought would come in at around £750, the pricing seems pretty consistent with the old model.

Order in! Expected delivery (27 inch) is 27 Dec -28 Dec. :thumbs:

I'm going to order a 27" i7 with fusion and 680 and the wired keyboard , want to see the screen first though. I wonder if they'll have a 21 on display today at the apple store in the bull ring?

If you want one fairly quickly... don't hang about!

Expecting mine Dec 17-20th.

Went for the 21.5" with the 2.9Ghz and 16GB of RAM. Was tempted by the fusion drive but had to draw the line somewhere!

Will be my first mac and can't wait. Really hoping the anti reflective screen is as good as they claim as that was all that stopped me buying the last one.

Anti reflective coating would be great. Mine drives me nuts!

I'm in no great rush tbh, so I'm going to wait for the 21" to enter circulation and highlight concerns :D

Had a play with a new one today in the apple store in Birmingham's bullring. Cooler than the old one to the touch and the screen really is a lot less reflective.

Sexy thin edges..... But I'd still rather have a disc burner built in.

Did you get a visa to enter the midlands ;)

Nah, sneaked in early before the border patrols woke up and have just sneaked back out under a rather annoying but helpful blanket of freezing fog.

I was going to do this but I've been waiting for this to come out for 6 months now and temptation got the better of me!

Kind of tempted with one of these (27"), if the screen looks ok.

Apparently the screens will be individually calibrated!...do you think that's something that can be relied on to be accurate?

If they are well calibrated (and there's no guarantee) it won't remain calibrated over time....

Ordered a 27" inch yesterday with the 1TB fusion drive. I need Bootcamp and the 3TB isn't compatible. I am also going to have to get an external drive for both storage and time machine back up.

I am going to store all my images and video on the external drive as I don't have enough room on the internal drive. Anyone got a view whether I can get away with a USB3 drive or will need TB? Especially for image editing. The former are much cheaper it seems.

I think the claims of individual calibration only apply to consistency from machine to machine rather than colour accuracy for mission critical work. You'd be advised to profile the screen anyway to ensure accuracy through your workflow.

From what I've read the screen is the same as the previous model but with the screen bonded to the panel now to remove the air gap.

I've just ordered some RAM to add to the machine prior to order as i'm collecting nectar points as I go :D
Between what I have already and what the imac purchase brings CS6 should cost me a great deal less :thumbs:

Got lightroom 4 and onone suite 7 sat here waiting to go on the machine :D

I haven't pushed the button on the mac yet, got a nice external blu ray writer on the way though. I want to see the 27's starting to be delivered before I fire to see if there's any immediate issues with the screen after the rumour sites suggested the screen lamination was the cause of the 27" delay

For those of you considering the new iMac it might be worth reading this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/03/apple_21_point_5_inch_imac_teardown/ about how difficult it is to add RAM/upgrade HDD on the new 21.5 model. Amongst other things you need to remove the main motherboard to change the RAM.

Looks like it would pay to give very careful consideration to your specification when ordering

be interesting to see if taking it apart into that many bits effects warranty.

Well I caved in :nuts:

Pressed the button on a 27" with the 3.4, 1tb fusion and 680 with a wired keyboard and a thunderbolt to firewire adaptor. The apple 4 nectar points per pound ends today and it was worth 50 quid back off the price :D

Only got cs6 to buy now and I'm set for another few years :lol:

Re the 21's people are already managing to add more ram without taking the board out by removing the fan assy and sliding the ram in, so it's only really the screen tape thats a major issue.

That was one of the reasons I posted originally as it's not exactly just removing a couple of screws on a plate already there for that purpose.

That was most of the appeal for buying my original iMac. Too difficult to take it apart means that it works like it should until something major goes. I found it far cheaper than continuously updating bits.

I think the point is saving money by DIY upgrades rather than paying the lube inducing apple upgrade costs.

Once you have paid that much you need to get the value. I was upgrading generic beige boxes because I could so I think they cost around the same in the end.

Lube is the cheapest bit!

No need to read and I can guess that the 21" iMac is NOT upgradable on any part whatsoever.

Clue?

1 - No little slot to open for RAM.
2 - Screen is glued in, not magnets.

Sooooo, who bought one of these then?? :D

I'm seriously considering upgrading to an iMac and want a 27" one. Just unsure what I should upgrade on it, if anything! :/

I don't have the latest 27", I have the previous. If I had the time again, I would very much consider the smaller screen. That much real estate can be difficult to view. The 24 seemed far more achievable.

I went from a 24 to the new 27 and you soon get used to the size.

I had the upgrade on the CPU and gfx ram and the fusion drive, crucial supplied the extra ram for a fraction of the cost of apples ram.

It happily chews through anything cs6 throws at it with other program's running.

It would have to be the 27" for me, I've seen a few friends 27" iMac's and its what I want! :lol:

Is that the top top spec one then?? Do you think the upgrades were worth it??

My D800 files are a making my MBP a little slow when I have a lot in LR and not sure exactly what I need if I buy an iMac. :thinking:

Think of how long you'll have the iMac for, before the desire/need to update to a new revision.
If it's likely to be 3-4 years, then consider the extra cost be spread over that timeframe - is it a monthly amount you can justify/live with?

Almost, top CPU, 2gb gfx ram and the 128gb fusion with a 1tb hdd.

The full SSD isn't worth the cost to me.

I have 24gb ram in it and it rarely uses more than 12 even with massive psd's open and safari and iTunes on the go.
