What are you doing with CCTV cameras that might need better-than-HDTV resolution?

It's great for the digital zoom for starters. These read interesting and the footage both day and night looks very good for the money. Two years ago I had to spend nearly ten times that for quality high resolution cameras from avigilon.

As above more resolution the better the zoom and clearer the picture ,also the newer 4mp version is much better at night time. I thought the aim for cctv is to capture the moment and if I used SD cameras 480p then I won't be capturing much or I will but it will just be a blurry mess.

That is exactly the reason I kept upping my budget at time. Too many cameras just show a blob, can't read number plates at the end of our driveway, can't deal with light changes quick enough and the list just keeps going on.

it would be interesting to learn whether they are properly onvif compliant such to use them with synology surveillance manager and the likes.

I might get another two and run some more poe cabling.

I use IVMS-4200 PCNVR with 2x Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I 3MP cameras and a 2TB Purple Western Digital Hard drive in my pc and the quality is very good but as in photography and cameras you are always looking for better :)

My brother has just got a system but he is using a Hikvision NVR and I find you don't have as many options in the cameras menu as in sharpness and so on as you do on a PC but the advantages of having a separate NVR is you don't have to leave your pc on 24/7 but it's quite energy efficient anyway.

I needed to get some POE adapters for mine and use a separate power supply so I could run just 1x Cat5E to each camera and then put the POE adapters at each end.
