New highway code announcement

I think if someone was already out of their car trying to shift it, I'd then be more likely to stop and help. A bloke sitting in there playing angry birds/updating his facebook status - "broken down at the roundabout 100s of people behind me lol" is more likely to tell me to f*** off if I decided to knock on his window and offer help. And if its woman, probably end up getting arrested for harassment or something these days.

I'll take a bet that I'm the only person on this forum who's ever had to push a DAF with its Variomatic gearbox?

Basically it couldn't be done! The drive belts don't disconnect from the driven wheels. It took four large and horny handed mechanics to heave that tiny little car into the workshops! :banghead:

Unless the road is flat and level it would be a fools game to get out and try and shift the car alone. Even with a flat/level road it is not without risks.

I understand about lights/jam but in a car park? So if I pull up into a parking bay, let the missus out to go shopping or whatever, I can't sit in the car and play on the phone? Why? This does not make sense.
 
If the engine still turns over on the starter motor, just stick it in gear and use the starter motor to move the car.

Not far from the truth really, My BMW knows when I have broken down where I am and what's wrong with the car so they can get me moving again and arrange transport because it knows how many passengers are in the car as well, if I have been in a bump or smash it knows exactly which area has been damaged and to what extent, if any air bags have gone off ETC, they even contact you if you have to emergency stop all this information is relayed constantly to connected drive, BMW connected drive automatically calls me from BMW control centre to ask if I am ok, I can respond and ask for assistance, if I do not respond they assess the damage and call the necessary emergency crews out to my location. all his can happen in less than 30 sec's before help is on the way.

If I come across an accident or a car/person in trouble I simply press the SOS button and I can get help there for them.

It's good to know technology is on our side as I used this in anger on holiday in France this year.

My eldest son was very impressed with the tech, when he first got in the car with his smart phone BMW welcomed him by text to the vehicle and asked if he would like to pair his smart phone, he replied yes and I just entered my key on the idrive.

So if you see me broken down be assured it's all happening.

All this and hands free too.

How long will it be before cars automatically report excess speeding to the relevant authorities?

WHEN you have broken down? I will use my mobile IF I break down rather than trust a vehicle to make the call!

That will be when the new pan European satnav system is up and running - it will be so accurate that nobody will be able to claim that they were speeding in the field alongside the road, and the technology will transmit info, not just receive it - speeding fines will be generated automatically and big brother will know exactly where your car is at all times.

I'm glad to say that I will be dead by then, or at least will have given up driving.

You lose. My mother had a Daf 44 in the 70s. It was yellow, obviously.

TBH it was scarier when it was going than when it was stopped. Neither easy nor desirable to start again when it stopped.
 
Alfas of a certain age and model had a high spoiler that came in handy when they needed pushing (and that gem came from an owner of the car who had had occasions to use the handle!)

You should embrace tech not fight it, this is not spooky witchcraft it actually works.

Look, try making that call when your arms a folded back on themselves after a crash, just saying like.

Then the answer will be simple. Buy a map book from Halfords, wrap it in tin foil, in case the men in black have added a bug and you're sorted!

Seriously though, I am not convinced they will use 2 way sat nav for speeding detection. I don't doubt it's possible, it's Government will to use it I doubt.

Yes indeed - I remember the warm feeling of happiness that washed over me when a punter arrived at the garage with one......LOL The Lada Reva and Skoda Estelle and all there model numbers...
