Hello dudes/dudettes.:)

I'm writing to say a massive HELLO! to all of you, and I would also like to ask for some advice.

I've been into motorsport photography for about 2-3 years now but only got a proper DSLR about half a year ago and would like some advice. I currently have the Nikon D3100 kit with the standard 18-55mm lens which does do its job but not quite enough. Before you say anything, I got told that Canon is better for sport photography overall, I know that! But it was either the 1100D or a D3100, I went for the Nikon (Obvious reasons, haha). Could any of you suggest any lens? As that's my next major purchas. Up to 500 pounds and preferably a fast lens, don't want anything more than f/2.8. :help:

Also, I have been told that buying a novice camera was a bad move as I could've bought a "professional" one straight away and not worry about buying a new one for ages, could any of you tell me, is it worth selling my D3100 now and buying a Canon 7D (What I'm interested in) or work on the D3100 and make something good out of it? :help:

Help would be apprecieated. If you want any samples of my current photos (from the Wales Rally GB 2012/2011) then just comment so and I will upload.

Cheers!

Stick with Nikon
I dont think you will get a motorsport lens at 2.8 for £500 unless you look for an old 80-200 maybe.
Or you could try the 70-300VR which is in your budget new and is damn good value for money. You dont need to worry too much about fast glass as most motorsport is outside. Yup its nicer if you can afford it but you gotta be realistic. stick with the 3100 and learn to use it selling and buying again will only lose you more money.
As for which is better Canon or Nikon for sport well frankly that could start a row. . . .

I shoot canon and I love Motorsport photography. I will most def be upgrading to the 7D. I would upgrade to canon 7D and invest in a good bit glass if I was you.
I'm shooting with a 100-400 L lens which does the job just fine but a 2.8 would be slightly better for obvious reasons. Getting the same reach at 2.8 will cost me a lot though!

I suggest getting a 70-200 2.8 and then a converter for a bit more reach. Hope this kind of helps :/

i cant understand why you would have been told a canon is better than a nikon or vica versa..... its not down to the camera!!! its down to the operator!!! and even then its preference and personal taste and views!!

the issue of 2.8 and motorsport is a puzzler for me also as motorsport style shots are usually panned, so your needing slow shutter speeds etc, and narrowing apertures (unless your trying to freeze the action then of course you wouldnt be)

how far away from the action are you planning to be?? that would ultimately depend on the focal length you would require... also going down the second hand route would get you more for your cash also

Alright thanks guys, I want something with a high range, but I've been told that even VR at lets say 200mm doesn't really do it's work at a good quality. Something up to 300 just in case I need it, I would mostly shoot between 50-150mm, which links to tezmeds question about how far from the action I would be, the answer is: I have no clue! :( It depends obviously, most of what I shoot is rally and it purely depends on which corner I get to stand on, sometimes it's 3 meters from the action (that's when I use my 18mm) and sometimes it's 50 meters from the action, for which the 55mm simply isn't enough :( so are you saying that I don't have to worry about fast glass atm? I've seen 75-200 f/2.8 Nikkor but that's 1000 more than my budget unfortunately.

Also, could you suggest a website with cheapish equipment? I've been told one at a car meet lately but I've completely forgotten it! (bit pointless but hey)

any wide aperture lens (lower f no) lens comes into their own when in low lighting conditions...... for taking rallying panning shots i personally dont think its essential to have a lens with a wide wide aperture, in generalistic terms i'd say the wider apertures are better suited towards portraiture etc....

generally photographic equipment holds its value well, so keepyou eyes peeled for bargains (and check them to see that you are getting a cheap lens rather than a cheap headache for poor glass etc

you could always look into 1.4x or 2x convertors and see if they will suit your current line up better??

Hi Mikolaj
And welcome to TP, I shoot rallies both forestry and single venue, If I were you I would look for either a Sigma 70-20 F2.8 or a Nikon 70-300 VR both of which can be bought for less than £500.00, myself I use the Sigma and I am very pleased with the results.

Hi Mikolaj,
As a Mansfield resident as well, I can tell you that you,ll struggle to pick anything up in Mansfield, there are second hand stores in both chesterfield and Nottingham though which are worth keeping an eye on.
Personally for rally, I have never needed more than 200mm on full frame, though if you wanted the extra reach for circuit racing, you could always pop for a teleconverter.
Seeing as you are local, you know about the Premier rally in sherwood pines in a couple of weeks yeah? Just the other side of Clipstone!

Thanks guys, I'll just keep an eye on what's around here! I have been told about the "Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF MACRO" which costs around 600, I'll keep an eye out on one of them!

Matty2, in reply to your question, ofcourse I know about the Premier Historic! :D
I've been there the past few years. The entry list looks interesting! Definately attending.
are you? :)
