Gonna cost me about 50 quid to reg kipax.photos and kipax.photography .. can pre order them and would be suprised if anyone else did so I should get.. but wondering if worth it.. have seen other TLDs come and go... will take years for .com to be phased out.... I suppose eventually... and as suich I am now talking myself into it hmm :)

Agreed.. the only reason I am going for the .photogrpahy one is so nobody else does...I feel blackmailed into buying it :(

It's totally unnecessary. I suspect there are going to be lots of brands held to ransom to have some of the variations. Cue lots of passing off cases.

Theres also the co.uk this year bringing out .uk but offering everyone ..wiht a co.uk first dibs on the .uk domain

Also alarming.. going back to the gTLDs registrars such as 1and1 or 123 reg.. they can auction off domains if more than one person applies for same name through them... thats just not right at all :( surely that means they originally apply for the domain themselves?

Trademark holders get priority in registering these domains, so anyone wanting one might consider getting a trademark first if it's important to them.

I've booked the .uk version of my domain and currently gave the .co.uk and .com variants, but the rest are simply money spinners and I won't be bothering with them.

Well they are out.. dot.photography and all them...

guess what?

I just couldn't be bothered.. didnt feel like spending 20-40 quid for one year of a domain most people wont even understand what to do.... really just couldnt be bothered at all.

Anyone bought any ?

Exactly this. With all these new TLDs coming out, how will anybody remember a URL anymore.

If I'm looking for a specific business in the UK, I'll start by typing in their name followed by .co.uk. If that doesn't work, I'll try .com

I'm never going to try all these new TLDs. They really are a waste of time and money.

years down the line they may become the norm.. but it will take years..and unless they actually phase out .com / .co.uk then it will be a long slow process... Not going to waste my money.. As Elliot says.. people will type the same stuff as now to search so its not going to be a massive impact...

save my dosh for better things :)

I think it is safe to say the majority of users now "google" for a company name etc. Maybe some old school people still try to find the url manually guessing at .co.uk and .com but given how much advertising now includes the line "Seach for X" instead of giving their url I think it is a safe bet that this is the way things are going.

Saying that then I can see how having the profession in the url/domain name can help with SEO....it might not now, but search engines adapt and can see they could use these specific domain names to help in search accuracy in the future. I have registered TomHolmes.Photography as TomHolmesPhotography.com has been registered since time began and I had no chance of getting it. Time will tell if .photography will help in search results but for £20 a year to get a nice short domain that people could get used to and to have it bagged for future use then I am not too worried.

That's exactly the view I've taken with it and so I've just registered my name at .photography. It may well be gimmicky but if we look back at the number of internet things we probably thought would never take off.........

But going back to talking about securing your own domain name, If you have a trade name that isn't your own name, you probably would be fine with a 'Passing off' case, if someone took your name, and you don't mind the hassle of getting it sorted.

I use my own name, and I want to protect it as much as I can, and for £19.95 pa. it shouldn't break the bank :)
