New full frame + 50mm options

I'm in the market for my 1st FF camera, my main area of photography is aviation and with that I have a 7d2 with a 100-400mk2 and I'm pretty happy with that set up. I'm trying to diversify what I shoot and try my hand at landscape and cityscapes, I particularly want to shoot at night and dusk/dawn. I've narrowed down my options to a 5d3, 5d2 and 6d. I'm keen to hear people's opinions of for and against of spending the extra ££ for the 5d3.

My next dilemma is I want a 50mm to mate to the FF camera. Is the 1.4 worth the extra cash over the 1.8?thanks in advance all.

Why FF? personally (unless money was no object), I'd invest in glass for the 7d2 and a good tripod.

This I really don't see the need for full frame if all you want to do is experiment with other genres get yourself a 35mm f2 IS or a 16-85mm and go shoot no need to blow a grand on a body just to see if you enjoy something!
 
The problem I have is I want to try and strive for better image quality, when length isn't a massive necessity for aviation I'd like FF for that as well. Also I want to have a 2nd body for aviation. Specifically 100-400 on the 7d2 and 70-200 on 2nd body, not much variation if the 2nd body is a crop sensor. I already have a very steady tripod
 
:)If your determined to go FF why not take a look at the 5D Mk1 also referred to as a 5Dc these days I still shoot with one occasionally even though I made a move to Fuji X system you will find thread here on TP dedicated to the camera.
I managed to get the Sigma HSM 50mm f1.4 and it's a stunning piece of glass but at the same time the 50mm f1.8 punches well above its weight and build to produce first class images.
Only you will be able to decide if the f1.4 is worth the extra £££s and I guess the same applies to a FF body but for a smallish outlay you could get a 5Dc and 50mm f1.8 ?
Happy hunting and remember just because a new model camera comes out the older model doesn't suddenly start taking bad pictures :)a 6D would be my choice if you are obsessed with noise at high ISO though

5DsR > 5D3 > 6D >< 1Ds2 > 5D2

If you get 5D3 you'll probably in all fairness dump 7D. The AF is such a big step back in 6D or 5D2

Re 50mm: The sigma ART or the cheapo Canon 1.8 STM are the best options. I'd advise against the old 1.4 lens.

Given your reasoning I'd go mkiii as the af suits your second aviation body better and the ISO/dr difference to the 6D isn't huge.

Ignore the canon f1.4 it is a lame duck get the 1.8 STM it is sharper at comparable apertures and the 1.4 is pretty poor wide open! Sigma's 1.4 art is worth a look if you can suck up the size and cost!
 
Thanks all, pretty much backed up my logic with the 5d3. I'm shocked their is no love for the canon 1.4 but I'll look at the 50stm, had the 50 1.8 and I hated the pepper grinding focus motor. Never used an STM motored lens before, how much do they differ to USM? Once again, thanks for all the input so far.

The 5d mk1 doesn't perform anywhere near the modern FF sensors with regards to high ISO and DR and overall IQ, which is the whole point of considering FF :)
 
Sigma 50mm f1.4 (the non art one.)

I had one and loved it. Back when I had Canon kit just for fun I tested the Sigma against my Canon 50mm f2.5 which I'd read was at the time Canon's sharpest 50mm and in the centre of the frame the Sigma beat or at the least matched the Canon at every aperture the Canon could match. It was sharp enough at f1.4 too. I think anyone looking for a 50mm should take a look at the Siggy :D
 
6d is a bargain, but the focussing system is a huge step down from the 7dII, if you can't live with that, the 5dIII is the only choice.

I've never read a review of the Canon 50mm 1.4 that made me want to buy one. The new 50mm 1.8STM corrects everything that was wrong with the old mkII 1.8, better build (but still light), much better focus motor (better than the 1.4) and a new aperture diaphragm. If this lens isn't good enough, the Sigma 1.4 is the upgrade, the Canon 1.4 isn't in the game IMHO.
 
didnt really consider the 1.8 STM before but it does seem to hold favourable reviews and still pretty cheap.
