Can anyone give me any idea why I am having this problem.

I recently purchased a new 1.5TB external drive to collect all my photos together. It will allow me to save 30MB Tiff files onto the drive but when I open them in Photoshop 7 and do the final tweeks and then try and save them as a jpeg, usually about 5MB, it says the drive is full. There is 1.2TB of free space on the drive.

Many thanks.

Hi Alan

A few quick questions, that may / may not help

Can you see the drive on 'My Computer' - what does the properties give as size used / size available ?

Have you formatted it ?

What Windows (and service pack) are you using - I seem to remember with XP you need the latest SP to run over a certain size drive (seem to remember 160GB ish)

Do you have access to another PC - does this read the drive any differently ?

How long have you had it - is it worth returning as faulty ?

Hope this is of some help, hopefully someone else may come up with further things to check / try

Andy

It maybe worth trying to save the JPG to your main drive and then see if it will copy to the drive by dragging it onto it.

Thanks Olly and Andy for your replies.

I can see the drive from 'my computer' and it currently has 1.19TB free and only 174GB used. I did go in and change the settings to give me full control in the securtity settings but that made no difference either.

I reformatted it to NTFS but again no change.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic with all updates added. I have a Western Digital 1TB drive as well on this computer and have no problems with this.

I contacted Amazon and they very kindly sent me a replacement but it still happens with that one as well and it sounded as though it was going to die from the sounds it was making! so that one is going back for sure.

Sent Samsung an email asking for help but nothing back other than telling me how to look and see what space I have free, even though I gave them this info in my original message.

Will try on another computer and see what happens there but otherwise may just do what Olly says and work on the C drive and copy it over when it's all finished.

Thanks for your help and interest.

Alan

Hi Alan

Did the HD make a tweating sound - if so it's not getting enough power (if via USB alone), You can try a shorter cable or swop to a different USB slot.

Can't think of any other reason for your problem, esp if it's the 2nd drive you've had

Hi Andy

Thanks for checking back. It was more of a clicking / knocking noise, so that one would have gone back anyway.

The original one seems fine apart from not being able to save the jpeg. It's well built, has a good reputation and keenly priced. Looks as though I will just do my post processing on the C drive and copy over when finished.

Must dash, have a lot of gigs to catch up on and a festival as well and the next one is on Friday!

Once again, thanks for your help

have you tried saving anything else on this drive or just the photos ?

Your welcome

Hope you manage to resolve it

Not up to now but thought I would give it a try with a word and excel doc and both are fine.
