I have a 7D at mo with a 70-200 f2.8 II - Would I be better to get a 1.4, or 2.0 Extender or spend a lot more on a 400mm zoom or??. To get that extra distance.
I have been shooting Park Footie for past few years but may have an opportunity to shoot at a professional footie ground fingers crossed?
Thanks for your advice guys and girls.

400mm zoom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bear in mind many pros are now shooting full frame 1DX with a 300mm and loads with a MKIV and 300mm giving them an effective 390mm with the 1.3 crop, youre already at an effective 112-320mm with your set up so are already ahead of many in the reach stakes

If you'll be shooting in good light then try a 1.4x for an effective 400mm on the long end

I have the sigma 2.8 setup and use a 2x converter
it's good but to get some sharpness you start at f5.6 and then stop down again to f8 or f9
I would go for a 1.4x at the effect won't be as harsh and AF will be quicker

Below is a shot with the combo 1250 @ F4 1250 iso @ 230mm and this was a shot before my camera went in for a new mirror box

OK thanks and great images. so is my 7D going to be ok?? and is a 1.4 mk ii ok or should i pay extra for the mk iii
Just seen the prices for 1DX blimey !!! 5K dont think I can justify that yet haha. Was told 7D great for sports??

Hi

Is my 7D going to be ok ?... I have never used one but a friend does , and he says I wasted my money buying an 1Dmk4 , but I don't think so as I have always had all the 1d series , I have used his and it seemed responsive so I am sure it would at least a good starter , good enough to earn enough to purchase what ever you desire .

1.4 converter over a mk2 converter ? .. All I can say the mk3 works very well on my 70-200 mk2

Idx ? ... maybe the next purchase , I just prefer 1d bodies .

Fair play Gary hows this sports work apparently Im waiting on some credits from local newspaper then get a licence??

I'd stay away from using the 2x extender with your set-up. I've the 2x on a 7d and 70-200 2.8 (mkII) and wide open (5.6) the sharpness is really hurt, from f/8 onwards its okay. I regularly use a 1.4x (mkII) with your set-up and its fantastic, hardly any drop off in IQ wide open and penalty is not too bad at one stop.

70-200 f2.8 is ok and for professional football (not footie as stated on your website!) a 300 or 400 f2.8. You'll also need a second body and 1D series is better than 7D. What licence are you looking to apply for?
