Hello all, I'm new here... and have a rather head banging problem. My new Epson v750 arrived, but I have spent nearly half an hour TRYING to get a scan of my 120's (!!!!). Perhaps the heat has made me completely brain dead, and I'm missing something obvious, or otherwise... but anyone, I've got a single row of 120 film placed in the holder the correct side up, and the white internal cover has been removed, in the Epson scan application I've set the film size to 6x6... but I still get either this result, or its basically very, very white and fully blown.
Any ideas? Thank you very much.

erm are the negs ok and have you set the scanner to professional mode and "film with film holder" ?

Looks to me like you didn't fit the frame to hold the 120 film.

That looks like a scan of the insides of the scanner.

indeed, and when i set to film with holder, the result is nearly the same (but tighter cropped to the film area only)....

I've used the 120 holder, and put aligned it up to fit into the two small holes on the right of the scanner bed... if that's what you meant... but still this :(

hmmm it still looks like you have selected "reflected" in "document type"?

here are my settings in Epson Scan window-

mode: professional mode
document type: film (w. film holder)
image type: 24-bit colour
resolution: 300 dpi
document size: w. 149.9 h. 264.4 mm
target size: w. 149.9 h. 264.4 mm
scale: 100%
adjustments: unsharp mask

......:shake:

Can you take a photo with the film carrier on the scanner bed, there's something drastically wrong there because it's scanning the bed of the scanner as though the film carrier is missing.

Also have you deffo taken the white pressure pad out of the lid of the scanner ?

I second Brian's conclusion. Doesn't that scanner scan from the lid for film and the bottom for reflected media?

Selected colour neg film? Tried thumbnail?...can't think of anything else

Are you using Epson Scan or Silverprint AI?

Have you done a prescan and then selected the individual frames?

Hi, it's Epson Scan, and I click the Preview button to get the scan...which comes out with that :(

Oh, I can't help then. Why aren't you using the Silverfast AI? thats the main reason for buying the 750 over the 700

I only just opened it and was trying it out quickly, which lead to this :-X
I haven't finished installing the rest of the goodies... only have dine the first step!

You definately have it set to reflective and negative

It's scanning the underneath of the film holder.

The reflective may not be in the same place as my V500 but it's the only way I can get anything like the result your getting.

I would check the cable between the hood and the base, make sure it's secure.

The scanner looks like it's using the bottom light to scan. Do a preview with the lid open a little and see whether the top light comes on or the bottom.

solved solved solved! :-)
thank you all for putting up with me on this... the back cable was ever so slightly out.... I did say it was a very very hot afternoon here in London (makes me a bit slow!).
I shall post proof it's working in a moment :-)

Mine:- I have no thumbnail button and a choice of normal and thumbnail after preview scanning.

proof it works! ... these are some of my first 120 attempts using my 500c/m, taken nearly two years ago in my early days!

Be brave, go 9600 dpi!:D

Be prepared for monster file sizes though.....

Enjoy!

Well no drum scanner performance with the V750 :'(.....the best this scanner can do is about 2400 dpi, but setting the scanner to 3200 or 4800dpi or even higher just gives you less pixel breakup which is better for large prints.
It's better for medium format use where you have the benefit of a larger neg i.e. 2400 dpi scan from a 6X7 is going to look a lot better than 2400dpi scan from 35mm

This is an interesting thing that keeps popping up, that the V750 is only good for 2400 dpi...:bang:

While I will immediately agree that a good drum scan on a good drum scanner operated by an experienced person is way superior I really do not understand this 2400 dpi thing...

Let's even say 4800 dpi (thereby not making use of the twin lens system in case this may be argued as interpolation...maybe successfully?)

Yes, the files are HUGE in those resolutions at 24 bit colour tiff but who cares if the quality is there?

I might add that really huge prints from small negs are maybe not the ideal application but then why even bother going larger than 600 or even 1200 dpi for net and screen use?

Well maybe someone can show the difference on a 20X16" print...... shots scanned at 2400, 4800 and 9600dpi. For me I've done crops at all dpi's over 2400dpi and the detail stays the same, but as you would expect as you increase the dpi scan the crop is smoother.......but maybe I have a faulty V750

Scanners that advertise two dpi for resolution is marketing speak. They are advertising the stepper motor resolution in one direction but in reality you are still limited to the optical resolution of the system.

The problem is with the high pass filter, although the CCD may be able to resolve 9600 dpi or whatever, the optics in the path of the system limit it to about 2400 dpi on flatbeds.

Read this here:

Got the link out of a similar thread.

Even film scanners don't quite make their advertised resolution, a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000ED apparently has the best of any film scanner and comes very close to 4000DPI at about 3800 or 900 if I remember reading one review of it.
