No
well here's a suspicous one

german account with russian e-mail address buys something from me for £300
they pay me £300 plus £300 postage (postage should be £30).
paid with paypal e-cheque (i.e. not cleared)
now i get an e-mail from them asking if i can paypal them back the extra £300

LOL they must think i was born yesterday

i told them to cancel the transaction and then send the correct amount, but to be honest i'm half inclined to ignore them and just wait for the e-cheque to bounce

This is a well known scam, people think they have the £600 in their bank, send £300 back & a week later find the original payment was fraudulent & hasn't been honoured by the bank.

Report them to eBay & PayPal, it won't stop them or get them caught but it will close that particular account so they can't use it to con other current users.

Its not a new scam, just newish for that area, its usually Nigeria.

Reporting them to Paypal and Ebay will at least get their account deleted and any feedback earned will be lost, cant hurt to make it hard for them. Be aware though, they can leave feedback for you as they have technically won the auction.

Its time Ebay got their act sorted out and put protection in place to safeguard good feedback from these people.

well he's now paid me again with the correct amount.. still an echeque so i'll just wait for it to clear.
the other items bought with his account all tie up with the thing i've sold him, so who knows.. maybe he is legit. we'll wait and see

I'll eat my 100-400 if you get your money. What possible reason would someone in their right mind walk into a shop, pay double for an item and ask the shop to send them half the money back later?

One important point to note

You must send the item via a delivery service that uses a live online tracking service

If the guy gets the goods and then tells paypal they didn't arrive paypal will automaticaly refund him if you cannot provide a tracking number that they can check on line. no ifs no buts

I know I have lost money twice through this, now I only ship outside the UK if the pay the full extra postage charges.

And remember e.cheques and normal paypal payments can be bounced for upto 6 months if the buyer suddenly reports it as a fraudulent transaction, Lost £400 to that one as well.

No wonder I don't do much selling on FleaBay now days

Paul

Never used ebay, but seem to here endless reports of scams.

Ebay used to be brilliant a few years ago, I was selling all manner of stuff and paying ebay several hundred pounds a month in fees. Nowadays they get zero from me and I would not touch them with a bargepole! Fleabay is full of crooks and scammers now and ebays reaction to this is to make it more difficult for the sellers. For instance, the extremely expensive and insecure Paypal is now compulsory even though a crooked buyer can have your goods and claw the payment back! Stupid and badly thought out new rules have led to a mass exodus of sellers from ebay, sadly most of the departed sellers were the good guys! Ebay? Forget it!

And remember to move the money into your bank account! iv heard they can have a moan and paypal just transfer the funds back.. if its not in the account (paypal) they cant...

I've never, ever been fleeced on ebay. I use it pretty much weekly - buying and selling and aside from the odd hiccup where items didn't arrive and I got a paypal refund, it's been great. You just have to be careful, sensible and be able to see things like "Can you refund me the 300 quid postage?" a mile off. Use your common sense, basically. I feel sorry for people who have been shafted but really there's enough stories and warnings out there that no one should get ripped off.

I've never, ever been fleeced on ebay.

Me neither, though I have had the usual scammer questions such as:

How much to ship to Nigeria, my Pastors son really needs the used mobile phone that you are selling for spares and repair. I understand that those who fall for this usually end up with something similar to the OP.
