Hi  I am very new to DSLR having recently bought a Nikon D50 with a Sigma 18-200 zoom lens. Talk about a steep learning curve :gag:

I am trying to learn one thing at a time, been learning about aperture and using aperture priority and just recently started with shutter priority as I was taking photos at a football match. I might even try manual soon wooooooohoooo

I am starting to see the town where I have lived for 10yrs (Berwick Upon Tweed) in a totally different light since I started with the DSLR. Seeing places I did not notice before etc, its great.

The advice I am after is which lens I should buy next, kit lens i.e. Nikon 18-55mm or a 50mm lens for close ups.

My areas of interest in photography are pretty vast, football matches, local events, landscapes, wildlife, flowers.

I would really like to be able use my photos as art around my home.

This seems like a great site so i am sure someone can assist to point me in the right direction.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to TP.

I'd recommend that you persevere with the 18-200 for a while. The other lenses you mention will really only bring you wider max aperture and perhaps better image quality (that you may not notice at first).
200 mm is not really long enough for most wildlife.
If you want to do close ups then consider extension tubes.

Once you are thoroughly comfortable with your camera and the basics of photography then think about more lenses. What you have is rather a good all round set up.

Thanks for that advice Dougie. To be honest the 200 lens struggles with a full size football pitch so I understand the wildlife bit.

I will take your advice and carry on with what I have got. I am enjoying myself a lot as I am.

I am in no hurry to spend my money if I dont need to, especially if its on stuff I dont really need for now.

Thanks again.

as said above...you have covered a nice range with that single lens....develop your self and you will slowly end up knowing which lens you will want or need :-)

Yes, that's a good way forward. It is very easy to get ahead of yourself and spend money on lenses that see hardly any use.
Robbo mentioned the natural way forward. Follow that and you will not need much advice on lenses - you'll know within yourself.

You have already discovered that you could use a bit more reach for football matches. That is straightforward.
You'll also discover that you need more reach for wildlife, but that is less straightforward because getting close enough, even with a very long lens, is another skill in itself.

hi and welcome
check your results with what you have
another lens imho comes later
but for me i would go for a zoom

Cheers for all the advice folks. I have been made to feel very welcome :) Not got around to putting up any pics yet but will soon
