Nikon d3100 or Canon 550d

Are these equivalent cameras?

Is the 500d worth considering?
 
Any camera will take decent pictures when paired with a decent lens. Go to a shop and try them out and see which one you prefer, i personally dont like Nikons as i cant get to grips with their menu when ever i have to use one at college so i bought myself a Canon and i absolutely love it/
 
I intend visiting a couple of shops tomorrow for a bit of hands on.

Just trying to get some idea of where the Nikon/Canon line up model-wise
 
for photography the nikon is better but for video canon is slightly better but the nikon is cheaper so you will need to go to a shop to get a good feel for the cameras to make a choice
 
Had a play with both today courtesy of Jessops.

Price did it in the end - £20 more for the D3100 with 18-55 and 55-2200 lenses (at Currys!)
