Need some advise.

I had a trip down to Jessops today to get my first hands on feel for my first dSLR. After trying quite a few and reading many a review the one I liked was the Canon 550d. Firstly I would like advise on the camera but secondly should I be concerned that the camera is nearly 2 years old?

As part of the deal I was looking at getting the CanonEF-S 55-250 F4-5.6 IS lens. Again anyone have any advise on this?

Thanks

James.

It not so much how old the camera is as to the amount of use its had. Ask Jessops to do a shutter count for you, Canon and Nikon say they should be good for 150,000 clicks but some last longer and many a lot less. If the camera has done around say the 30,000 + mark and you still wanted it then try to get the price down.

Bit like looking at a car, the bodywork all clean and polished with a nackered engine which in a camera is the most important part.

Was the camera new, but you are concerned that it is 2 years 'out of date'? Thats how I read the question.
If so, relax, the 550d is capable of superb quality and I think it's an excellent starter choice. The improvements from model to model these days are getting increasingly smaller and you can wait forever for the next wave of improvements.
If you want more detailed suggestions on what to buy then let us know what your intended subjects are.
Regarding the lens, I've never used one but it gets continually praised for it's quality considering it's price. It's a little slow for action shots but generally regarded as a good bargain

Thanks for the advise. You are when you say the camera is new and my concerns were regarding it being out of date.

Thanks again

Hi
I went for this deal in the summer rather over the 600D, I can live without the extras and bought extra glass instead. I'm enough of a realist to know I'll never compete with the pro's and can't afford a traffic cone of a lens to take a shot of a dragonfly 500m away, but this does me fine. I read loads of reviews too and many rated the 550 as the best option.

Thanks BB. Pretty much sure I'm going with this one and replies like yours back that up.

thanks again

Personally I'd go for the 600D because the swivelling screen would be useful, and it has better video options. Any camera is going to be superseded by a newer model but at least with the 600D it would stave off "upgrade-itis" for a bit longer!

The 55-250mm is a decent lens IMHO. It's no L lens but it can still capture some nice images.
