Hi all,
I've finally got fed up with the slowness of my pc - an hour to load 90 RAW's!- so it looks like time to replace it, some components must be getting on for ten years old. Mostly it'll be for interweb and photo editing with nothing more sophisticated than PS elements, I do occasionally play shooting Nazi games after a bad day at work!

Anyhow the rough spec I've come up with is this;

Intel i5 750 CPU

1 TB sata hdd

Windows 7

4 GB ddr3 1333 mhz

Asus p7h55 motherboard

ATI hd5770 GPU

all in a silent case with suitable 650W PSU and cooling fans, I should be able to get this for a bit over 700 quid.

Am I on the right lines or way off the mark? Any advice would be gratefully received,

Thanks for reading,

Stu.

Thanks for the link David, I'll investigate that; thanks for the advice Neil, I do tend to over-engineer things!

I've fount two companies that can build a machine for about what I can spend, Arbico and Computer Planet. Does anybody have any experience of these places?

TIA,

Stu.

To utilise the full 4 gigabytes you will need to install the 64bit version of Windows 7 otherwise the 32bit is only capable of using 3 gb max.

Thanks for that David, looks like I'll have to tread carefully; tbh the cost of components is more than having someone else build it so I don't see the point of messing about. That and being ham-fisted.....

Thanks for your input Brian, I did realise 64bit was the way to go but I won't be doing the build.

That PC would be fine, I would suggest is to make sure the MOBO can take an additional 4GB.

Using IE, iTunes, PS CS4/5 and others can put some stain onto a PC at times.

Good idea schizophonic, I'll bear that in mind hopefully it'll give a little future proofing; I may even opt for a cheaper GPU as the 5770 might be a bit of overkill.

TBH anyone sticking x32 windows on a new computer needs shooting (unless they have very specific perpheral/software requirements). There are still big companies doing it and it really grinds my gears...

Anyway to the OP I would suggest two HDD's, on smaller one for your Windows install and programs and the other for storage and a scratch Disk. You may also want another disk the same size as your storage disk in an external enclosure as a backup disk.

I built a new one recently. My old PC was the oldest PC I had ever owned (6 years) and post processing had become painful, with a background in IT I should have recognised the value of updating much sooner, new PC has made PP much less painful and much quicker.

I also went for an i5 as its good bang for buck at the moment, here's the rest of my spec. with a few comments.

1 x Antec 300 Three Hundred Case - Nice decent sized case at a good price
1 x OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU - SLI Ready - Decent quality PSU
1 x Sapphire HD 5750 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI - I run dual monitors so this suited well.
1 x Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 - Stock HS and fan turned out to be poor so I updated this to the one below.
1 x CorsairR CWCH50-1 Water Cooler - Quiet and relatively easy to fit because its a sealed unit.
1 x Samsung SH-S223 22X DVD±RW DL - Cheap decent DVD burner
1 x ASUS P7P55D-E PRO iP55 Socket 1156 8 Channel - Ive used Asus boards for years and like them, this has Sata 6GBs and USB 3.0
1 x Corsair Reactor Series R120 120GB 2.5 - Had issues with this, it worked for a week then failed totally, hope its just a random one off.
1 x Western Digital WD1002FAEX SATA-600 - I use this as my working drive drive pics and LR catalogues.
1 x 8GB (4x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Classic, DDR3 PC3-10666 - Much0 memory makes CS5 happy
1 x 64Bit Windows 7 - I was XP for years and that's what I was supporting when I left my IT job so knew it really well but I actually quite like Win 7 now ive been on it 2 weeks.

Running CS5 and LR3 is now much less painful.

Thanks for all your thoughts chaps, it sounds like I'm not too far off the mark with my first ideas. Unfortunately it's now on hold for a little while as a new clutch has cancelled out the pc funds.

Cheers,

Stu.
