New 'Daily Lens'?

So i was out today, and today affirmated my suspicions. I don't really like the sigma that i have currently for a walkabout. It's heavy, the filter size is massive, and it unbalances my camera, (400d, sure a grip would fix it though), but it's sharp, got a nice range, and is fast, and it's a 24-70 f2.8 EX macro.

All in all, i don't want to be spending that much more on a lens, so i'd sell the Sigma, and then probably put maybe, £100 more towards another walkabout.

I'd LOVE to get L glass, as it's SOOOO much sharper, and just more nice. Had a play with it the other week, and it was :love:.

But i don't produce good enough pictures to justify one, nor do i aim to make a living out of it, so i don't need the most expensive lens about.

So i was thinking something like an 18-50 sigma, or something equivalent?!

It feels like i'm not going to find a lens that i like if i keep comparing it to the L glass though. It'd match the other L glass lenses that i have, but it's Too expensive. So what else is there avaliable that is highly rated?

It's a popular question, but i'm really not sure :shrug:.

How much would sell your current Sigma for?

I'm not wanting to sell it in this thread, but it's mint, so when adding the £100 onto the lens selling price, i'd probably have about the £275ish range. (could push it up a bit, as i want to have a go of the 24-105f4L, and if i could find a good 2nd hand copy.)
 
You should take a look at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It's a fab walk-about lens.
 
WHAT OF THE LENS RANGE DO YOU USE?

and do you need the low f stop for higher shutter speeds
 
it's the wider end that i use the most, and wish i could go wider. That's one of the reasons also of me thinking of getting rid. Something that'd go to 17/18mm would be better, as i keep having to switch to the kit lens,a nd the drop in IQ is noticable.

If the balance problem with with the sigma is really your biggest issue then the 24-105 is going to be just as bad if not worse. I suspect whats really going on is you've got lens envy and want a 24-105 for the little red L and your now looking for reasons to justify the purchase? If it's the 24-105 you really want then just buy it now you'll only waste more money on lenses that you then sell on second hand otherwise. Personally I think it's not wide enough for a walk about on a crop sensor but thats just me.

Just saw the above post, it might be worth looking at the sigma 17-70 it's a great range for a walk about takes lovel pictures and has even been compared to the quality of some of canon's less L lenses
 
Got to agree with a1ex2001, the 24-105 is not wide enough for a walkabout and it will be heavier than your Sigma, I would go with others have said get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 it a great lens, resonably light and compact and super sharp, you wont be dissapointed.

Actually, thinking about it, i'm lacking at the wide end of the lens, but i've got a wide angle lens on the shopping list.

I could probably disregard getting rid of the sigma, and get a 12-24 tokina f4 lens, and also get a grip for my camera.

It'd balance it, get rid of the unbalanced feeling i get, which would also get rid of the lens being 'heavy', as the lens feels heavy due to it being heavy at the front, which is very noticeable when using my 70-200L lens.

What are peoples thoughts about me doing that?

Would seem a sensible option, allthough obviously it's not a single lens walk about solution, I really like my 17-70 because if I'm going for a walk and don't fancy carrying much stuff but still want the camera I can just sling it over my shoulder and know I'll be able to get the shots I want (most of the time). In my opinion the longer lenses especially L series ones are always going to feel abit unbalanced on an xxxd series body allthough the grip will improve this.
 
I loved my 24-70 before I got shut of it and while it did feel nose heavy on my 400D when I gripped it the balance was excellent and also the grip gave me more options for portrait. I would go for the grip and keep your current. As far as moving to a 24-105 goes if you are missing the wide end then it will be a waste of time for you unless you are going to augment your collection with something like a 12-24 or maybe a 17-40.
 
i would get the seperate wide angle lens and grip instead of changing.
is the kit lens wide enough for you or do you want to go even wider?

the 17-70 doesnt have a fixed aperture, which may be a deciding factor for you:shrug:
 
what about the 17-40L? Or would that not be long enough?

As said above, if your Sigma is too heavy the Canon equivalents will be heavier and not and wider.

Also there is the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 if you aren't planning on going full frame...
 
I've seen the 17-40L, and that's not really that great on a crop sensor, but orsum on a full frame.

TBF, i want a wide angle, and i was thinking that if i was to get the L glass, i'd at least need a grip for the 400d. Which is what's on the cards, a grip for my 400d to balance it out a bit, and then a wide angle. See how i progress, and then in the future see whether the outlay of the money is worth it for the L glass.

And if i really feel flush, a 40d is perfect for my hands, my mate was horrible enough to let me have a go...
 
If you can stretch to about £170, get the Sigma 17-70 and keep the 24-70. This way you would have wide angle, and a nice lens to get you wide shots at f2.8 still.

Its great value and i just sold my Canon 17-85 IS USM as i prefered the results from the Sigma 17-70 that i bought the misses (and will be stealing if i really need that wide angle shot as i use my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 all the time :lol: )

That, or just wait for the MKII version of the Sigma 24-70 as isnt it meant to be lighter then the current one?

The 17-40 is great on a cropped sensor camera...

I gotsta agree. Yoi get a moderately wide angle lens at one end and pretty much rhe equivalent of a 50mm standard lens at the other with a constant f4 aperture throughout the range. The colour saturation from this lens is superb and it's not that heavy either.

Don't forget this lens focuses down to just a couple of inches so it's great for near macro shots of butterflies and flowers etc, and it's weather sealed. Pretty much an ideal walkabout lens I'd say.
 
Had a Sigma 18-50 but I wanted more reach.

Sold it and bought a 24 - 105L.

Best decision I ever made!!
