New D90 owner tomorrow some advice needed

Well after months of umming and arghing over which camera to get I have decided to get a D90 but now I have another mind boggling decision before I hand over my hard earnt tomorrow.
Do I buy the kit with the 18-105mm lens or buy the body only and my own choice of lens which opens a can of worms as which lens to buy I will be mainly wanting a walk about lens while I learn my way around the camera so sugestions are very welcome.
 
The 18 - 105 mm is a very good lens particularly considering it's price as part of the kit and will serve you well as a starting walk about lens so I would recommend it if you want to spend any more money get a 70-300mmVR as well and you will be well set.

I am doing exactly the same thing as you tomorrow and the very helpful people on here advised me to get the 18-105 kit lens.

The 18-105 is a great lens, very versatile, good optics and cheap and it works very well with the D90.

I have one for mine and it is a great walkaround lens.
 
But @ 3x the price (2nd hand) it's a lot of money for an extra 2x magnification.

Yes, given the choice between the two I'd get the 18-200 but VALUE wise it isn't necessarily better.
 
I think it depends in your budget and what you are going to taking photos of.

My budget is £700 and I will be taking photos of anything and everything lol... but I like kids and family shots, wildlife, woodland scenes, graveyards and old churches.
 
Depending on the deal you are getting get it with the lens. That other lenses to get for indoor photos and children would be 50mm f1.8 also know as the nifty fifty and can bought second hand for about 70pounds.

Another good lens is the 35mm f1.8 for about 170 new.

Don't forget to get a memory card a well.

After that you will need a bag extra battery....

It gets very expensive....

I bought the D90 with 18-105 and I love it. That said, I also have my D40 with a 55-200 on. Looking forward to getting in studio with the 18-105 and see how it fairs. The D90 and 18-105 are worlds apart from the D40, and it's kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200).
 
I cant wait to get it just a quick question how long do I have to wait for the battery to charge up.

You mean the VR version, or the original non-VR? The non-VR 18-55 failed to wow me, certainly having played with the 18-55. And no offence to Ken Rockwell, but he's certainly not my prime source of info or advice.

And Baldy...yes they did :'(
 
Bought a D90 last year and whilst the kit lens is good I sold it fairly soon and got a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and it's a cracking all rounder. The non-VC one I have is well regarded as the best version and can be had for around £200 second hand.

I'd buy it with the 18-105 and see how you get on. Should you choose to change in the near future, you won't lose much money at all selling it on here as I did.
 
When I got my D90 I got the 18-105 lens and I am still impressed with it and won't be parting with it any time soon
 
To answer your questions. Yes it will take B&W but you can do that in editing anyway.
Yes the 18-105 is a good lens. I'm very happy with mine. Very sharp. My next lens was the 70-300vr2 for wildlife, also a great lens. Purchase a wide angle later for a full range of coverage:thumbs:

The 18-105 is a decent lens for the price and good for general use. Pick up a cheap 50 for low light and that kit will keep you busy for quite a while.
 
Just to echo other comments, the 18-105 is a great lens, and very forgiving to the newcomer with the VR at the long end. I coupled my 18-105 with a 70-300 VR, which is my favourite lens.

:lol: It's nothngi against him, but he's just not who I look to for advice. In my opinion the 18-105 is worlds better than the old kit 18-55 lens. That's not to say the 18-55 is a bad lens, I still have it, and can't see me getting rid of it any time soon, but I much prefer the 18-105. At the end of the day, even a top-10 from someone like Ken Rockwell will still come down to a matter of personal preference. And I personally prefer the 18-105 :D
 
Go for it, great camera and lens, mind u have not had it for long and thinking about the d700 now. Must stop looking at the classified sales????????

No never got anything free apart from the super duper activity camera but I did get the D90 and will be taking it out today :)

I'm still deciding on D90 with 18-105 mm from Currys or Jessops. Had a feel yesterday compared to the Canon 550d and the Nikon is much better built and feels last plastically.

Yesterday I bought a new d90 with the Nikon 18-105 and Nikon 70-300 lenses 2 scandisc extreme 4gb class 6 memory cards from Cameraworld for £1045.98 Great set up recommended by the people on here. Got £50 off the 70-300

I got the D90 with the 18-105mm kit lens a couple of months ago & I'm chuffed to bits with it. Each time I use it I like it even more.

I've since invested in the Nikon 70-300 VR lens as well - yesterday was my first time out with that at Rockingham - a highly recommended set-up! In fact, when I've eventually got a 35mm f1.8 then I think I'll have my complete set! (Until I decided to get something else ;) )

Yeah I was torn between the Canon and Nikon until I tried them both. Even my wife said straight away .. "Go for the Nikon"

I got mine from Currys in the end and the price matched a local independent shop and I managed to knock another £20 or so off the price. It was funny as I told him I work in a shop (part time at Game) and know all about targets so I would take the extended guarantee (which I wanted anyway) and he could knock the price down....

He agreed straight away and give me one of my months extend guarantee for free
 
well done on your choice, got mine before chrismas and realy enjoying using it.
