Hi
aim to get a new d700 in the next couple of weeks, but back at focus was having a look on the cameraworld stand they were selling refurbed d3 at £2499 with 6 month guarantee very nice but the £6/700 extra over the d700 would go towards the 20-70 lens. But now they are selling the refurbed d3 at £2100 what with the d700 at about £1750 and the grip at £250 there is not a lot in it.The thing is one comes with a 2 year guarantee the other 6 months and is a fefurb(not sure what this means, could be anything)

Most of my photography is portrait, events(black tie) and small weddings so the 700 would be more then enough but later in the year i am hoping to get into some horse racing photography. Would you stick with the 700 or take a chance on the d3. cheers gary:thumbs:

Hi Gary,

Ii I were in your shoes, I deffo go for a D700, the image I.Q is precisely the same as a D3, it's simply a few features like the predicted life expectancy - 150,000 actuations to the D3's 300,000, a 100% viewfinder, dual card slots and frame rate etc that are missing.

If your going to be shooting some action (horse racing) then maybe buy the grip which despite makes the body larger than a D3, enables a faster frame rate.

i prefer the D700

but if you allways have a winder on and can perhaps get a longer warranty out of them the D3 is a good price and in the end a full on pro camera
i would ask about the refurb and shutter count etc.

but as said you wont be dissapointed with the D700 it can do just about everything the D3 can

If you think you will use the grip often on the D700 get the D3. I find the D3 grip much more comfortable and it's lighter.

Kanine cameraworld it is the d3 not d3s

I got a 'from out of the glass display cabinet' display D3 for £2000 + vat, im very happy with it, I take a lot of pics, having taken a D80 to 80,000 clicks in 18 months the life expectancy was the clincher for me.

I was at Focus on the Wednesday and Cameraworld were offering re-furbed D3's at £2100. I tried to get them to drop to £2000 and failed. Being bloody minded I walked off in a huff. I took a couple of shots with it using my own CF card and when I got home uploaded the test shots I had taken and was surprised to see the D3 had only done 5600 actuations. I wished I had paid the £2100.
I looked at the D700 but for me the D3 has lots of advantages for me personally.
Since then I have purchased a D3 for £2100 with only 160 actuations but no guarantee -
I would go for the D3 with the guarantee, it's superb and I don't think you'll regret it.

I compared a new D700 to a 2nd hand D3 and went for the D700 because:

*smaller body
*dust-off sensor
*warranty
*handling same as D300
*~£300 saved

The only regret is the D3 AF is apparently better, though you'd hardly call the D300/D700 AF shabby.

Geoff I think I was looking at the d3 at the same time as u the guy on the stand put a 50mm sigma on a body for us to try

if you're gonna buy a grip for the D700, and even moreso if you're going to buy D3 batteries and charger to go in it, it'll be about the same price to buy the D3... plus you've got the dual card slots (backup for weddings) and the knowledge that you've got the top end professional camera, that you could use as a hammer and keep on shooting.

Plus, it's the /best/ as opposed to the D700, where you'll be left with (in your mind) second best ;)

Was that you Gary? Well wadda ya know - I went back at around 4pm and he just wouldn't budge a penny :bang: Did you end up buying anything? Was that lady you were with your wife and she went along to make sure you didn't :)

I was in the same boat and went for the D700

That was the wife geoff she had the money got a few small bits I went back just before we left but they did not want to move on price or any free be bits never mind

they were certainly a bunch of tight arses werent they?;)

Gary - I see you presently have a D200. While the D3 is very attractive at the price you have found, I would stick out for the D700. Why? Because I wouldn't want to mess around with anothier Nikon battery system. I have a D300 and would like to go for FX too. Having to take two chargers when I travel and investing in spare batteries for the D3 is the main reason that I am resisting the D3. That, and having the option to leave the grip for the D700 behind when I want to travel light.

Pickle The battery thing did come to my mind as I have 4. For the d200
