New D300s

Hi Gary
I hate to say it but I feel you are 100 per cent correct :( I can sometimes get a bit carried away :nono: and loose my sense of direction. Thanks for the advice Gary :)

It's like that episode of Only fools and Horses in this thread. Gary,Gary,Gary,Gary, Gary,Gary,Gary,Gary,Gary,Gary!

What the other Gary has said is correct though it's always better to invest in glass rather than bodies. Better glass will have a bigger impact than a better body on your images and bodies depreciate in value rather quickly were as good glass doesn't.

It is easy to get carried away, at new cost value I have around 5k worth of gear. I mainly use it for taking pics of my kids. :bonk:

You have probably discussed this in another thread but whats the reason for the upgrade, what are you mainly shooting?

How long have you been shooting Chiller? If it's more than a few years, and you are competent enough with the D90 and good glass, then moving to FX shouldn't be a problem. I would have moved to FX years ago if I could afford it. I feel I'm more than ready, but at the same time, I'm good with what I have.

Maybe a used D700 and a nice new lens would be better for your money?

It's fine when others advise not to rush, but when you have that urge, and know you're ready, I say go for it. Life's too short for hanging about at the same level.

If you want to stick with DX then I would say D300 or D7000 both have better autofocus than your D90. Not sure but I guess from what I read you have a battery grip that will fit the D300(s)/D700?

The D300 is slightly better built, weather shielding than the D7000 but the D7000 is newer, better high ISO noise control and is less weight and pretty much the same size as your D90. The D300 will be a bit bigger and weighs more. Think it's about 200grams more but it does feel like more in the hand at times.

As others have said what do you shoot? If it's a lot of walkabout stuff and poor lighting then a D7000 will be better as it's a lighter body and better ISO. If it's sports I would say the D300 would probably be better specially with something like your 70-200 on a monopod.

Morning All
Ok to answer some of the questions. My main interest is Motorsport, but also nature and trips to the zoo. The reason i would like to upgrade is for the far better auto focus system, better built, weatherproof, and higher frame rate of the D300 / D300s. I have been shooting a couple of years. I totally agree about the glass that's why I bought the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and I also would like to get the Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G. ( Yes I know it would not be much good on an FX camera ). Yesterday I went to The RSPB: Minsmere in Suffolk for the first time (A great day out) got talking to a chap with a D300s. We were talking for so long the wife and daughter had disapered into the distance to find a bench to sit on  So I am going to stick with trying to get a D300 or D300s. As Gary Gary Gary  said 'I cant see how a D3S can benefit you' which I have to agree with. It was a bit of a all gear and no Idea moment  The chap yesterday did suggest a Teleconverter.(Yes, No ? ) Thanks again for the help and advice you are giving me it is very much appreciated.

All the bartering skill in the world is no good if the seller says "I'll just keep it as a dust cap then"
LOL ;)

 If my bartering skills were any good the seller wouldn't have wanted to keep it as a dust cap :'( but if the seller saw sense he could have used the money on his RC Car collection  instead of it gathering dust :D

There's an argument both ways :)
However as a sponsored driver all I do is send an email & lots of shiny new stuff appears direct from the factory after a few days ;)

I don't want an argument  I would just like to sell it to me please. You could tell me you best price inc.RMSD :naughty: and I will either :) or :'(

Yes, yes, all the way, i would say you definatly need a "crop" camera for the extra effective reach, also buy a battery grip for the extra 8fps (im selling one :D ) and a 1.4x teleconvertor and you will have an effective 420mm length lens on the long end.

Dont worry about loss of IQ with a teleconvertor, it wont happen with either a £100 Kenko or the £230 Nikon as theyre that good.

I might sell my D300s after the paralympics and replace it with a D700. I am in
Stratford, you're most welcome to see it.

He already has the grip.

Just note Chiller that you will also need the EN-EL4 battery and the BL3 adaptor to get the extra fps unless you use it with AA's.

I have the original Nikon EN-EL4 and a BL-3 and also a cheapy set from ebay. Both do the same thing, the ebay one was just over £20. I hunted high and low for the Nikon too. :bang:
