New computer?

oh wait, i didnt see him suggesting a thousand watt >.>

yeah, that is pretty excessive

that said, it depends on availability - bigger is in fact better, in this case, but not always worth the price difference, so if he can get a good deal with small enough difference id probably go to 800 personally - that said though, i am biased, since im used to the psu requirements of gaming

I'm running a 650W PSU with O/C i7-2600k (up to 4.3GHz) and a GTS 450 graphics card (which is a mid range last gen card - 7.2 on windows score). The graphics card recommends a 400W PSU minimum. This is the first card I've ever had with the 6-pin power supply and the PSU can supply 2 of them. A good 650W will be fine with a lower performance card :)

bigger is in fact better,
Not always. Power supplies have sweet spots for efficiencies. If you underrun a big power supply, you can in fact use a heck of a lot more power (you have to underrun it a lot though...).

Whilst they are expensive, the next power supply I buy will be a 650-750W 80 plus gold power supply as they're better than 92% efficient at 50% power (which is where I think I'll be TBH). See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_PLUS#Efficiency_level_certifications I currently have 3 80 plus bronze supplies on 24/7 so the savings will add up....

fair enough. im not responsible for the electricity bill, so power efficiency tends to cede ground to future proofing :P

and im under the impression AMD and ATI run a hell of a lot hotter than intel and nvidia respectively, which obviously ups the power consumption

Would an Arctic Freezer Pro cpu fan be ok for my needs, it's not expensive at around £15 or so and you usually get what you pay for, but it seems ok to me?

AMD/ATI GPUs seem to run cooler and have lower power consumptions than the respective nvidia card.

The setup im running at the moment is a AMD Phenon 1055t hexi core. which is super smooth with asus m4a87td evo mother board. cost me about £190 new for both and they are great. I also got 4gb of corsair dominator RAM 1600mhz for £65. and these really pack a punch. they may be cheaper but it will allow you to buy a more expensive graphics card. i got the MSI 570gtx (£280).

eh, got nothing on a guy i used to know

he built a case for himself out of perspex sheeting - left the side panel unscrewed for easy access - this guy ran a stupidly inneficient AMD chip, temperatures were so unbelivably hot, i swear

anyway, one time theres this noise, and the perspex side panel jumps out, the expansion had bent it till it got thrown out - that said, it was a very inefficiently designed case to begin with

same guy also burnt out a psu just by booting up, but was only a five-fifty watt, i think, though it might have been a six

CPU/mobo/memory is good value, but mid range now. Why would you spend £280 on a graphics card if you're not gaming tho... I've just spent £100 as my last gfx card was playing up and I fancied a little more "snap" on windows open/close. Doesn't make a difference for PS tho...

I mainly use overclockers and dabs.

Both good service but with dabs when my mobo died after 10 months they offered my a replacement or money back quite shocked at the full price i paid for it back.

Build it clock it simples

I find ebuyer is generally cheaper than either overclockers or dabs....

i'll answer your question mate..

if its anything like the fitting on the low profile model then avoid, i had one for 1 day and 3 out of 4 of the daft plastic fitting prongs snapped.

if it was me id be looking at scythe coolers, also used alpenfohn in my ITX boxes with very good results. and bolt through where possible rather than silly push pins.

i just use wherever is cheapest these days by doing an initial search on google shopping, my lian li case came last week from someone ive never heard of.. even used play before as i was reeeally desperate for stock.

if i cant wait then novatech is 20 mins down the road.

I mean if you're buying a multiple items (mobo, cpu, mem, disk etc...).

My very recent graphics card came from a very small company oop North I'd never heard of (so much so I spent 20 mins checking out if they were legit - they were and their courier - DPD - even estimated my delivery time within a hour)...

I have one of these (not low profile) on my AMD server. Doddle to fit and quiet for the money. It must be just you Neil :p

I wouldn't disagree - 2x Scythe Ninjas here...

maybe

the intel 775 low profile cooler had a really daft plastic peg system which was so tight fitting the very brittle pegs snapped and got lodged in the board needing molegrips to remove :bang:

and thats the way to do it

though i find wherever is cheaper to usually boil down to aria or misco, if anything is more expensive, it boils down to one or two pounds more, and you save that on shipping by ordering everything from the same place
